The Green Dam Youth Escort Software, which was suppose to be officially shipped on all computers sold in China starting July 1, is not compatible on Mac computers. This maybe part of the reason why China postponed this order. The software is also not compatible with a 64-bit OS.
Now, besides the fact that it doesn’t work on 64-bit operating systems, we have another one: it doesn’t support Macs. Thus, Apple’s computers seem to be – at least for the time being – exempt from the order that all PC makers must include Green Dam with new PCs sold in China.
Despite the ban Acer Inc. says they are shipping PC computers with the software on. There compliance comes soon after Taiwan has opened up for foreign direct investment from China. Sony is the only other company who is complying with the rescinded regulation.
Meanwhile, an official with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was quoted as saying Beijing "will definitely carry on the directive on Green Dam. It's just a matter of time."
