Citizen Journalism showcase from Demotix_com

The 2009 Media Guardian Innovation Awards have awarded Demotix (www.demotix.com) a citizen-journalist newswire and photo agency the prize for best Independent Media at the ceremony which took place last night (the 24th).

The MEGAs (as they are sometimes called), were launched in 2008 and  described as the 'Oscars' of media awards in the UK were presented by Lauren Laverne and include categories such as 'Best Advertising Campaign', "Community Engagement' as well as the prestigious 'Independent Media' Award.

The success of Demotix at such an award ceremony highlights the growing recognition citizen journalism is gaining amongst the mainstream media (Demotix itself has already received favorable coverage by Reuters:
http://www.reuters.com/news/video?videoId=93462) and with the falling revenues and redundancies effecting most of the big media outlets demonstrates the increasingly held belief that citizen journalism is the future.

Great topic. Thanks.

Demotix wins the Media Guardian Award for Independent Media. It's about the biggest prize out there.

"Readers who want global news can find it now on the Web, more easily than ever. And there have been some interesting efforts at citizen journalism or blogging from hot spots around the world. One new venture is Demotix, which offers aspiring journalists a chance to upload their articles and photos for others to see — and some possibility that news outlets will publish them."
