Why Did the NFL Take Down the Clint Eastwood Super Bowl Commercial?

Did you see the Chrysler Super Bowl 2012 commercial featuring Clint Eastwood on YouTube? No? You're not alone, since YouTube pulled it down as per a request by the NFL.

Chrysler has since re-added the Clint Eastwood Super Bowl commercial, which you can see below.

The NFL issued a takedown request to YouTube, most likely in order to drive traffic to its own site. The problem is that the NFL has no copyright claim whatsoever to the GM ad. No NFL imagery, and no mention of the NFL (or even football) occurs in the commercial. Just Clint Eastwood giving a pep talk to the US of A.

Why, then, did YouTube roll over so quickly? Shouldn't YouTube be a little less knee-jerk in complying with every takedown request that comes down the pike? Clint Eastwood would not be amused.

According to GM marketing boss Joel Ewanick, Chrysler had nothing to do with the takedown, and are still trying to figure out why it happened.
