The hack-o-nauts of the "iphone-dev team" are inching closer to unlocking the 3G iPhone, which means that users will be able to use it at full capacity on other 3G networks, not just the network to which it was forcibly married in a shotgun wedding.

Just say "yes" to crack.

As you may remember from the first-generation iPhone unlock, this is big news because it means they have access to the core of the system, which gives them the ability to fully manipulate the iPhone 3G hardware and, therefore, unlock it.
No publicly-announced completion date, though:

Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal.
