Whenever I take a flight it seems like it's more of a chore than a pleasure: delays, lost luggage, poor service... I could go on.

It seems like many US passengers agree, based on the rising level of complaints about airline quality in 2007. There is at least some good news for AirTran and Jet Blue, which came top of the airline quality rankings.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- AirTran and Jet Blue have taken the top spots in a national survey of airline quality.

The rate of consumer complaints more than doubled at US Airways.

They were followed by Southwest, Northwest and Frontier airlines. At the bottom of the list was Atlantic Southeast Airlines.

The annual Airline Quality Rating survey released Monday found that overall the industry did a poor job last year. There were more lost bags, more bumped passengers, more consumer complaints and fewer on-time flights than in the previous year.

The rate of consumer complaints was up 60 percent. US Airways had the most complaints last year. Southwest had the fewest.

All these problems are making travelers grumpy, the annual survey said.

The industry posted declines last year in every area of the Airline Quality Rating, amid rising fuel prices, safety problems and bankruptcy filings that shut down three carriers last week alone.

The rate of consumer complaints, for example, more than doubled at US Airways and Comair, and rose for 15 of the 16 airlines included in the study. The exception was Mesa Airlines.

On-time arrivals dropped for the fifth straight year, with more than one-quarter of all flights late, according to the survey. The rates of passengers bumped from overbooked flights and bags lost, stolen or damaged also jumped in 2007.

"The trend is bad and it doesn't look like it gets any better," said Dean Headley, an associate professor at Wichita State University and co-author of the study. The survey results mesh with the spate of problems that have beset U.S. carriers, starting with surging fuel costs, Headley said.

ATA, Aloha Airlines and Skybus stopped flying just last week because of financial pressures. Major airlines have slashed jobs and passenger amenities while adding fees for second bags, traveling with pets and booking tickets by phone.

It is not surprising that people responded to higher prices and more frequent delays by complaining more, Headley said.

Six airlines -- Frontier, Northwest, SkyWest, Southwest, United and US Airways -- showed declines in every area in the survey, although Southwest still had the best on-time arrival mark at 80.1 percent.

Here are the rankings for airline quality in 2007:

1. Air Tran
2. Jet Blue
3. Southwest
4. Northwest
5. Frontier
6. Continental
7. Alaska
8. United
9. American
10. Delta
11. US Airways
12. Mesa
13. SkyWest
14. Comair
15. American Eagle
16. Atlantic Southeast

This was an interesting shot only because as I was taking it, the San Diego Harbor police were running my ID to check for outstanding warrants. A concerned citizen called about a man standing on a utility/electrical box taking pictures of airplanes. Three squad cars arrived to check me out. The man in question was actually another individual who had left just 5 minutes earlier.

Rachel Nixon, I like this story. It's good stuff.  I am a little puzzled though, is Frontier just below AirTran and JetBlue, which were the best, or is it just below Southwest, which doubled in problems the past year?

Well, Frontier comes in at number 5 in the ranking, which is below AirTran, Jet Blue, Southwest and Northwest, in fact. I think they take various factors into account, which is likely why Southwest still ended up in third place. Complaints doubled for US Airways - is that what you're thinking of?

Jet Blue has never let me down, except for once when they lost my snowboard. They brought it to my apartment the next day and gave me a $30 flight voucher. I dig them and like the fact that they've never had a plane crash.

I recently flew Frontier from PDX to DEN and DEN to MSP and their service was excellent.  Their fare also was much better than what it would have been flying NWA from PDX to MSP, and NWA service would not have been as good.

We've been flying Southwest Airlines and have yet to experience any difficulties. We have been on time or even ahead of schedule at times. Now waiting for our luggage after the flight... now that is a little different.

We flew on ASA between Cleveland and Atlanta and it was a great experience. I know a lot of these regional carriers get a bad rap but a lot of their operations are controlled by the Legacy carrier they operate for. Delta would rather cancel a regional flight or give priority to one of their own flights rather than one they are having operated by a regional carrier. That leaves the regional carriers like ASA left with a cancellation or degraded on-time performance on their record. I think the employees of ASA do an outstanding job and have always enjoyed riding on their aircraft.

Don't fly US Airways.  I have been flying with them since 2002.  Recently, due to a complaint I made to them over poor customer service, I called their "customer relations" and politely informed them of what happened.  The result was that they "audited" my Elite status and reduced my status and miles.  Yes, they can do that.  Read the fine print.  They have gotten so bad that I will go out of my way to avoid these folks.

Thank you.

Steve
