Continental Airlines announced today they too will be charging customers for their first checked bag.  They will charge economy-class domestic flyers $15.

Continental Airlines, falling in line with most of its rivals, said today it will charge many economy-class domestic customers $15 each way for the first bag they check.

Will the new fees put you off flying?  Vote Here

They will not be charging their elite-level frequent flyers, or military personnel.  The new fees will begin for all tickets purchased on or after October 7th, 2008.

The fee applies for tickets booked beginning Friday for travel on or after Oct. 7. Like the others, Continental won't charge the fee to some people, such as elite members of its frequent-flier program, people traveling on non-discounted coach tickets, members of the military or their families traveling on official orders.
The service fee will not apply to EliteAccess customers, including those seated in First or BusinessFirst, OnePass Elite and SkyTeam Elite members, customers traveling on full-fare economy (Y) class tickets, or military personnel and their families traveling on official orders.

The policy will apply immediately for tickets purchased for destinations within the U.S., and between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada for travel commencing on or after Oct. 7, 2008.

Checked bags must meet weight and size restrictions or will be subject to additional fees. Continental's policy for carry-on baggage remains unchanged.

Continental, like most other airlines already charge for a second checked bag. Continental is following in the footsteps of American Airlines, United Airlines and US Airlines.  Currently, Delta still allows a first checked bag without a fee and Southwest still allows up to two bags without fees.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines still allows two free checked bags, standing virtually alone in the industry. Delta Air Lines continues to allow a first checked bag on board without charge.
There are ways to avoid fees if you can be clever. I recently booked a ticket to fly to Albany, NY.  I saw United flew there but knew they charged for a first checked bag.  Air Canada I saw flew there but operated on United.  I ended up booking my ticket through Air Canada, still flying United, but avoided the checked baggage fees and saved money just by booking through their counterpart that didn’t charge a fee.  Little sneaky, but I saved over $40 on my roundtrip ticket.

They have also recently reduced mileage bonuses for their elite frequent fliers.

Also, Continental reduced mileage bonuses for elite frequent fliers in its OnePass program. Effective March 1, so-called "Platinum Elite" customers will earn a 100 percent bonus (down from 125 percent) and "Silver Elite" members will get a 25 percent bonus (down from 50 percent).

The "Gold Elite" bonus of 100 percent remains in effect.

The carrier further said it will stop awarding a minimum of 500 frequent flier miles per trip even if the distance traveled is less. Actual flight miles will start being awarded for tickets purchased Nov. 15 and beyond for travel on or after Jan. 1.

I don't think that 15$ will put me off flying. But it is just annoying.

No Airline should be allowed to charge for 1st bag checked in, they are supoosed to attracting passengers not driving them away.

I agree completely.

The $15 charge will be an irritant but will not keep my from flying Continental.  I would rather see them adjust the flight prices and not have the add-on charge.  All of the airlines have to be getting killed with fuel prices, etc.

My family has flown Continental many, many times and our experience with the airline has been good.  I will continue to fly with them whenever possible.

Your ticket is for transporting one person from point A to point B, why should an airline not charge you what it costs them in fuel to transport your luggage as well?
