Google Voice (the application formerly known as Grand Central) will be opened to the general public soon, but not today. The rumor mill was in overdrive about a possible June 18 launch for the phone number consolidation service, but Craig Walker, (one of the Grand Central founders) says that it's not ready just yet.
Google Voice, whose private beta testing is closed, will feature some new elements, such as number portability and SMS support, as well as the ability to ring your handset if/when you lose it.
As with all things Google, would-be adopters must weigh the econvenience factor against putting all of one's tech eggs in one basket.
Ever since its previous life as GrandCentral, the service has been widely acclaimed by its beta users and the public has been dying to get its hands, or mouths, on it ever since. The service had been invite-only when independantly owned but Google slammed the doors and killed the invite system as soon as it aquired the service
