Of any technological device to experience a 'critical severity outage', the Blackberry is surely the one most likely to produce widespread panic and withdrawal symptoms amongst its ardent users. Especially in the CrackBerry-addicted 'Americas' market.

"But it's been FIVE minutes...what Facebook event invites have I missed???"

E-mail service of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry smartphones experienced a “critical severity outage” on Monday, the company told clients in an e-mail.

“This is an emergency notification regarding the current BlackBerry Infrastructure outage,” a RIM support account manager, Bryan Simpson, said in an e-mail message. The message said the outage affected enterprise clients and “users of the Americas network.”

RIM was not immediately available for comment and its e-mail message gave no estimate on when service may be restored or how many individuals could be affected.

Last April, a major outage brought down BlackBerry service across North America, leaving thousands of users without access to wireless e-mail.

Blackberry customers of all wireless carriers were affected by the outage, according to AT&T officials.  There is no word on what caused the outage, nor when the service will be restored.

During last April's outage, RIM remained silent about the cause for two days.
