Darron Gibson Quits Twitter After 2 Hours
Man U Midfielder Darron Gibson Attacked on Twitter
Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson joined Twitter, since all the cool kids are doing it. However, Gibson soon learned firsthand that, when creating an easily-accessible online identity, one enters the food chain. Darron Gibson's Twitter username was @dgibbo28, but he deleted it after only two hours.
While Rio Ferdinand had asked the twitterverse to show Darron Gibson some love, that's not exactly what happened. Football fans laid into Gibbo, calling him a traitor, a crap footballer, and every insult under the sun. Here are some of the tweets that made Darron Gibson quit Twitter. The "traitor" remarks refer to the fact that Gibson was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, but played for the Republic of Ireland.
What made matters worse was that Gibson had all his updates sent to his phone as SMS messages... so he was getting a barrage of haterade to his handset. So maybe it wasn't the content of the @replies that chased Darron Gibson away from Twitter, but the fact that he was getting so many of them.
Is changing account settings really that complicated, though? At any rate, the #getgibboback campaign is in full swing- we'll see if Gibson can be persuaded to return to Twitter (maybe), and if fans can be persuaded to be less jerky (good luck with that).
