NP Rank:
Detroit Suffers with Automakers
As General Motors, Chrysler and Ford seek a federal bailout, the effects of their impending bankruptcy are rippling through the auto-industry pond: manufacturers will sell fewer parts, and dealerships will sell fewer cars: this means even more jobs will be in peril during a season characterized by layoffs.
Sales of General Motors cars fell 45% last month.
"It's a little bit scary for me," says general manager of the Matthews Hargreaves Chevrolet dealership, Walt Tutak.
"I've been here for 34 years and I've never really seen it this bad".
However, unless the automakers drastically rethink how they do business, all a bailout would do is partially rewind an already-ticking clock.
It is hard to find anyone in Detroit who opposes the bail-out.
But there are those who see the big three as the authors of their own demise because they were slow to innovate and develop more fuel-efficient vehicles.
"Now I barely see a few for lunch. It's hurting my business tremendously. The trickle down effect. It doesn't just hurt the auto industry, it hurts the businesses around them also."

It may be time to look to another type of industry that could replace the Auto industry in Detroit.

Detroit is not suffering "with" the automakers, Detroit is suffering "because" of the automakers and their lack of action. This problem has been coming for a long time and all the executives did was throw more money at it without making any significant changes. Unfortunately the downfall of the American auto industry seems inevitable. It might be time to invest our money in creating jobs in future industries rather then wasting the money by ignoring the cold hard truth.

A pristine new logo on a Chrysler at a local dealer, north London, England. Big American car companies like Chrysler, Hummer, etc have only a small proportion of the market due to their 'gas guzzling' image and bloated price tag.
