RANT AHEAD: and it's only IMHO....
You decide for your self. Sure seems to me that everyone is lining up to shit on Detroit and it's auto industry. Noone bashed AIG or Lehman Bros about thier payscales. Line work is no picnic. Some is dangerous, most is just hard on the body. I do not build cars but I am UAW and I earn every damn dime that I am paid. My state helped to mobiliz this country through the industrial revolution and two world wars and some self-serving fucknut of a senator is gunning for us and it really chaps my ass.

Re: Senator Shelby - If he emulates the Japanese and their work ethic so much, it seems to me that everything I have ever read about the Japanese and their honor has been:
"I didn't or have not been doing an admirable job for my "COUNTRY", therefore I am resigning and maybe I will commit "hari kari", (wishful thinking). Wouldn't it be wonderful to read this as the final comment by the Senator. Take note Senator, the one thing that Japanese think of first, first, first and first is "Country". You seem to think of Alabama, Alabama and Alabama. Where's the Country in your mind? Last, Last, Last, Last, Last, Last, etc. I suppose that you are already positioned for a $1,000,000.00 speech in Tokyo, Korea, China or Germany when you hopefully lose the next election or resign. I will guess you have never been in a war and you drive a foreign product. I have nothing but contempt for your so called "patriotism" and your concern for a country that has given you your lifestyle. Why don't you work for less, give up one half of your medical, and slice your planned retirement benefits. I personally don't think you could run a "laundromat", let alone decide on how to manage an auto company. Why don't you delve into the actual workings of foreign plants, especially Asian. You want to correct the imbalance, pass a l5 or 20% value added tax on all imports as the other nations have done.
The Japanese
How courteous is the Japanese
He always says, "Escuse it, please"
He climbs into his neighbor's garden,
And smiles, and says, "I beg your pardon"
He bows and grins a friendly grin,
And calls his hungry family in;
He grins, and bows a friendly bow;
"So sorry, this my garden now.
