Deutsche Post Cuts 9,500 DHL Jobs in US
DHL Layoffs
Deutsche Post, owners of the global ground delivery company DHL, announced it was cutting 9,500 jobs as it discontinues air and ground operations in the US.
The ailing delivery company DHL shed over 5,000 jobs in the last year and is closing down its US operations, ceding its place to UPS and Fed Ex.
Deutsche Post also said it would scrap domestic domestic operations by DHL Express in the US to focus entirely on its international business. There are currently 18,000 workers in the express unit. Some 5,400 jobs have already been shed there since the start of the year.
Teamsters in the US have expressed concern over DHL's withdrawal:
"This weekend DHL Express informed top leadership of our union of its intent to withdraw from the U.S. domestic market -- an 80 percent cut in package volume. This drastic move by the Company will result in significant loss of jobs for our membership at DHL Express. We will do everything within our power to assist our members through this difficult time.
DHL Announcement
The long term effects of DHL closing down its US domestic service won't be known for a while, but the immediate reaction will reduce its US shipping volume by 80 per cent:
The move will reduce the company's U.S. shipping volume by 80 percent., and the job cuts come on top of 5,400 others previously announced. The move is expected to reduce operating costs at the DHL U.S. Express unit, which currently employs some 18,000 workers, from $5.4 billion to less than $1 billion.
DHL's larger competitor United Parcel Service might take over its US shipments:
Deutsche Post AG's unprofitable DHL unit said that it's still in "ongoing" talks for larger competitor United Parcel Service Inc. take over its U.S. air shipments and that a final agreement may come by year's end.

I had no idea Deutsche Post owned DHL . That are a lot of lay off and will hurt the economy even further.
