Digital TV Delay Possible

Thursday, Jan 8, 2009

The switch to digital TV could be delayed.

A consumer group is asking the federal government to push back the February 17th deadline.

That's because money for the government's digital converter box coupon program has run dry.

Applicants are being put on a waiting list.

Many families are counting on the $40 coupons.

The Consumers Union said the government should delay the switch to digital until the problem with the coupons is fixed.

"We hope Congress acts responsibly, that they fix this problem that has been created by the Commerce Department, that they refund the program, they allow consumers to reapply if they have expired coupons, and they provide real local assistance to consumers who need it," said Joel Kelsey.

The Commerce Department said it's working to mail coupons without delay.

But they warned Congress in November that money was running out and urged households to apply for coupons by December 31, 2008.
