These days, corporate universities like Accor and others as well as corporate research departments are budding up in place of state universities as social institutions. But I don’t think these universities’ research outputs can serve the larger society than their corporate interest, the profit.
Consumer goods once categorized as items with side effects are currently turned up to be best ones to the societies. For example, coffee and tea are now promoted as best consumer goods. What this tells me is that research outputs by corporate universities and corporate research departments are biased and serve the interests of their corporations instead of societies.
Such biased research output is common in the area of pharmaceutical fields. For example, the competition for stimulant drugs has drastically created biased conclusions without mentioning side effects sufficiently. Ethical standards and code of conducts seems to be absent. I am afraid that one day, corporate universities and research departments may come up with the positive effect of cigar smoking for man. Don’t you think?
As I tried to discuss in my other opinion in NowPublic, even state universities are on the process of being commercial to serve corporate interests than the larger societies. Is this a good trend?
