I hardly felt the first step so I didn't even really react to it, but to continue after that the chair must either be pulled or pushed forward so that the system knows to engage the back wheel and "climb" down the step.
First, going up to a flight of steps and looking down is a little nerve jangling after you have been in a chair for 20 years, but then to be pushed forward into the void is downright alarming. However, the action of the chair is very smooth and it never lets you go too far forward.
It worked beautifully - even though every cell in my body screamed against it at first.
