THIS IS HORRIBLE!!! They have blocked off most parts of China and wouldn't this cause more talk and more info about the riot?

Few weeks ago, they blocked off Google  = Gmail! I use Gmail for work and it definitely caused much problems.

How much content can they stop from leaking around? Why won't they just cut off internet access in China?!?!! this is ridiculous..

of course this is stupid, hands down. but the chinese govt obviously has the right to keep us from using this stuff, so there IS  a law, and as long as you are in this country you can think about their laws what ever you want but still have to live by them...

of course there is no freedom at all but that was clear years before facebook was even invented, so yeah it is ridiculous, but remember the things the government does and accepts which are far worse than just blocking some homepages.

don't get me wrong, i use facebook myself to contact my folks at home, but i think there are bigger problems going on in china than that. and we still can get information about whats going on...

this is retarded, i actually have to use email to talk to my friends, since i'm stuck in china on vacay. i've never seen a government that denies doing something that's obvious they did.

This is a real shame, what a great country to live in...(i am truley in love with the culture and the people here) but the control of the government on certain things such as the media and internet has got me scratching my head.

If china wants to advance and continue to grow it needs to open its doors. It grew rapidly when it opened its doors to foreign investment ...and in my view the next step is to open up the media and allow views and opinions to run free. Blocking facebook and twitter will not help resolve the problem in Xinjiang (which to be honest appears to be a problem which arised from chinas tight control and manipulation of this province to dilute the minority group) as people will always find other ways of spreading the conflict. Anyway isnt the conflict resolved and now under control.... so can we not have facebook back now please?

The main point is that blocking a website that allows people to speak freely only iritates those living there and using a situation such as the riots in Xinjiang is only an excuse for the country to yet have greater control the gateway of information. I can only hope that in the next few weeks facebook will be returned beacause im screwed without it, mainly because i need it to organise my life back home on my return.

just back from 2 weeks in HK, spoiled me.  FB still blocked in Shanghai July 14, 2009.  Best of luck to the freedom fighters.  Hope you are ready for a long struggle a lá the Vietnamese model.  Will be even worse considering that you have oil and the Chinese are not going to give that up easily.  And there are quite a few settler Han Chinese in Eastern Turkistan.  Good luck guys.

1) Any foreigners on this forum are in China as guests. Media censorship and human rights issues have been documented for Chinese for decades. It is how it is, and that won't change over night. If you don't like it, you know what to do....

2) I use facebook regularly, and yes, its an inconvenience being blocked, but its not the end of the world. People communicated with friends, family and work before in invention and release of media like Facebook. Send emails, use the telephone.... There's many ways...

3) The Chinese government are only looking after the interests of their nation. If freedom of speech was possible here, do you think it would be possible to retain control and relative peace in a nation with 1.3 billion people, many who are relatively uneducated and easily led?!. Now that would be chaos! Although cynics may believe that the government just want to control the nation, maybe they should open their eyes a little, and realise that the government are also trying to keep relative peace and keep their nation growing.
Many of us who have been here for many years will instantly recognise the change in the last decade, for the better, and the significant increase in quality of life for many (but not all) citizens. Internet and email is also much much more available now than several years ago....
