Facebook is implementing a new feature that allows profiles of the deceased to be "memorialized". Facebook received complaints from some users that their dead friends or family members showing up on home page after the Suggestions feature was introduced.

By memorializing the account of someone who has passed away, people will no longer see that person appear in their Suggestions.

Once an account is memorialized, only confirmed friends can see the profile. Contact information and status updates will be removed to protect the deceased's privacy. No one can log into the account, but friends and family can still leave posts on the wall.

When someone leaves us, they don't leave our memories or our social network. To reflect that reality, we created the idea of "memorialized" profiles as a place where people can save and share their memories of those who've passed.

Facebook ask users to notify them when someone on their network has died, and deserve to be memorialized.

How Facebook would verify the accuracy of death reports is another question. I can already see a new strain of Facebook prank...
