Facebook has been relatively clever with how it has allowed usage of the new usernames feature. According to their blog:
Your Facebook Page must meet two requirements: it must have been live on Facebook prior to the May 31, 2009 cut-off date and have had a minimum 1,000 fans at that time.
This limitation is temporary. All Pages created after May 31, 2009 or that had less than 1,000 fans on that day will be eligible to claim usernames on Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Popular brand owners thus have the chance to register their brands on Facebook first, before spammers can get their hands on those coveted usernames.

Some brands seem to be able to register multiple custom usernames. E.g. Pepsi has "pepsi" and "refresheverything" and Coca-Cola has "coca-cola" and "coke". How do they get 2 usernames when regular users / pages get only one?

this to me sounds like the internet 1.0 all over again..
the guy who used the domain name "pizza.com" for 10 yrs paying less than $10 for them all combined.. sold it off for millions of dollars...
this might as well be the chance of a lifetime for the current facebook users :D

They should apply this rule in formula one racing. That way, only the good old teams would be racing.. as opposed to the sad new teams they intend to induct next season.

Firstly, it sounds like a good idea to have a username specific to one registered user and the best part is, it's permanent. Secondly, it will be suitable to get a the right username for a specific business before someone else gets it.
