First Lead-Free Home Appliances Start to Hit U.S. Marketplace
It's not news that lead is a toxic and sometimes deadly substance that has invaded everything from our coffee cups to our children's toys - but for the first time this summer - big manufacturers have decided to do something about it.
Enter stage left - some of the first 100% lead-free home appliances ever to hit the American marketplace that are ALSO Energy Star qualified - certified green by both the Environmental Protection Agency and also the U.S. Department of Energy. It's great to know we can now have energy efficiency in the home without poisoning the whole family. The first and only home appliance that is completely lead free AND energy efficient will be Texas-based Alen Corporation's air purifier called "Paralda" (not to be confused with your Prada shoes). Paralda was years in development - as Alen Corporation executives decided they didn't want their own young children exposed to lead in home appliances or home products - so they set out to fix the problem. Gotta give Alen execs credit for digging deep into good old-fashioned American ingenuity.
Paralda is a portable air purifier that works best in spaces up to 400 square feet - it only weighs 17 lbs. and comes in bamboo green or pure white. It also has a nifty UV lamp to zap bacteria that the company claims say it lasts 3 to 5 years, is ozone safe, and uses 55 watts. A 24-hour programmable timer makes sure it's on only when you need it. The advanced HEPA filter seems to be better than other air purifiers we have tried. More info at:

What's next for home appliances? Try a "green" vacuum cleaner. It's coming to a store near you soon also. Although details are not yet available ... it seems it will be extremely affordable, have great sucking power (equal with those mega-buck vacuums) ... but won't break the bank on your next Power and Light bill (great news as most power companies just announced increases of up to 16%).
If I could also place a request to any manufacturers that might be listening ... how about a green oven/stove?
