Frontier Airlines to charge for first checked bag
I took them a while, but Frontier Airlines will now charge for a first checked bag. Customers will have to pay $15 starting for travel on or after November 1st. Customers currently get charged $25 for a second bag.
Passengers flying Frontier Airlines will have to pay $15 for their first checked bag starting Nov. 1 to help the carrier offset skyrocketing fuel costs as it navigates Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the airline announced Friday.
A second bag will cost $25 -- a charge that the airline implemented a couple of months ago, but Frontier's frequent fliers are exempt from both the first and second checked bag fee.
The Denver-based airline has followed the ranks of other carriers that recently have started charging for checked bags fees
EarlyReturns Summit and Ascent members, AirTran Airways A+ Rewards Elite members travelling with Frontier Airlines and active-duty military personnel will all be exempt from charges for both first and second checked bags.
United Airlines also just announced they will double their current second-checked bag fee.
That story can be seen here.

I think it is important to note that here is where carriers like Frontier stand......
They are a lower cost carrier and are operating under bankruptcy protection. With that being the case, I factor in that a second bag charge is acceptable. Their lower cost fares almost put them in the a la carte department when it comes to charging for bags.
They do make flying possible for people on a budget (not to the extent that Southwest does) and seeing that they are trying their best to get out of debt, while keeping fares lower than traditional carriers, I feel that the public shouldn't be so hard on them.
Now if this were one of the major carriers, then I feel the public has every right to complain.
No matter what, it is a good story. And I feel we will see more of this in the months ahead.
