When even the cheapest chickens are security tagged to stop shoplifters stealing them then we really must be in an economic trough. This news in the same week that Gordon Brown tells us that Brits must stop wasting food and supermarkets to cut down on BOGOFs (buy one get one free) offers.

Frozen chickens are being security tagged by a supermarket in a bid to halt thefts amid the country's credit crisis.

The birds, which are the centrepiece of the British Sunday lunch, have been alarmed with the security devices usually reserved for expensive booze and high-value clothing.

Sainsbury's is believed to have taken the move after seeing a rise in shoplifting of the chickens - both the top-of-the-range organic birds at £8 and the cheap £2 chickens.

A whole chicken is only two pounds?! That is really cheap already - it's shocking that they have to shoplift those! Also, very sad though...

File this under "you have got to be kidding me."

Have British consumers sunk so low that a chicken needs a Lojack?  Next they'll be giving ASBOs to bacon - meh!

Nice to see that all of Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's efforts have gone to waste.  It's sad but, so long as "free range" equals "expensive" in the eyes of the Great British Public, people will continue to vote with their wallets.
