Gears of War Gets Big Screen Treatment

I've actually heard younger kids referring to Mad World as "that Gears of War song", because of the ubiquitous advert featuring a lone futuristic soldier facing a gigantic alien bug to the tune of the Tears for Fears classic.

Now Gears gets the big-screen treatment. I predict lots of CGI and underlit scenes, though I've never played the game on which this upcoming film is based...

"Gears" centers on a world beset by aliens known as the Locust and a team of soldiers fighting to retake the planet. The violent action title is Microsoft's second best selling videogame franchise, behind "Halo." A sequel is coming out in November.

New Line had initially aimed for a summer 2009 release for the pic, but Warner has not yet dated "Gears."

It's the second videogame adaptation for Legendary, which is also developing a pic based on Blizzard Entertainment's hugely successful "World of Warcraft." In addition, Legendary topper Thomas Tull is a co-founder of videogame publisher Brash Entertainment.

Oh, yeah, about that song...

It appears the Gears of War "Mad World" advertisement has done more than just augment sales of the game. The somber 2001 Gary Jules and Michael Andrews cover of Mad World, originally released by Tears for Fears in 1982, hit number one on the iTunes top sales charts yesterday, according to fan site Gearheads of War.
