Girls Trapped By Storm Update Facebook Instead Of Dialing 911

The first instinct for two teenagers trapped in a storm drain in Adelaide, Australia was to update their Facebook status rather than call the emergency services. Two girls, 10 and 12 years old, had a mobile phone to use while trapped in a drain, but opted to log in to Facebook and let their friends know that they were in trouble by posting an alerting message in their status fields. Luckily, someone saw the disturbing update and called for help. The emergency services expressed concern over the incident, saying that calling 911 would have been a lot quicker and would have guaranteed real help.

The MFS was concerned about the girls' communicating via Facebook rather than calling emergency responders directly, but it is quite possible the girls felt as if they were in no immediate danger.
"Young people should realize it's better to contact us directly. Luckily they are safe and well. It's awful to think what could have happened because of the delay."
