Word has come down that GM Canada will be cutting at least 38,000 jobs, including 6,000 workers, 14,000 at dealerships and 18,000 at parts plants. The cuts come after the government rejected an earlier survival plan from GM, who were looking for $6-7 billion in aid.

The jobs will be slashed over a period of five years, cutting its workforce by almost 60 per cent. GM also confirmed their dropping of the Pontiac brand.

In an aggressive update of a "viability plan," GM disclosed yesterday that the company will chop an already-diminished workforce by 6,000 jobs, or almost 60 per cent within five years; slash its dealer network by about 300 retailers, or 42 per cent; and eliminate the 83-year-old Pontiac.

Industry officials said in addition to the 6,000 direct job losses, another 14,000 eventually will disappear at dealerships and a further 18,000 will be out of work in the parts sector.

This is a big chunk out of our economy.  We need some good news one of these days from North American Auto Makers.

This will result in the loss of a lot of other jobs in Ontario.

All customers should boycot the purchase of any Chrysler or GM vehicle.  I know a least one single point Chrysler dealer that has been with them, since 1915, 94 years.  If they don't care about their dealers they don't care about their customer's. With the investment that we have made.  This has nothing to do with cost cutting, it has every thing to do with reducing competition in order to charge what ever they please for their vehicles, understanding that with spread in price, the margin of profit is more.  Buy Ford or buy foreign let Chrysler and GM bite the bullet.  How could any body trust a company to repair or service their vehicle.  And how far does a customer have to travel to secure such service.
