General Motors will cut 1,600 salaried jobs this week, half of its 3,400-layoff target for its US operations. Worldwide, the automaker is looking to cut a total of 47,000 jobs.
GM is currently operating on over $13 billion in US federal bailout money.

“These are difficult actions,” North America President Troy Clarke wrote in an e-mail to employees. “However, given the economic realities facing GM, these actions are necessary to help ensure the long-term viability of our company.”
