GM Dealer Closing List: 1,100 General Motors Dealerships
General Motors, in its continued attempt to become solvent, is closing 1,100 dealerships, and has already begun to alert those affected. There is no public list of the closures yet. This announcement comes on the heels of Chrysler's closure announcement yesterday.
We'll post a link to the full dealer closing list as it becomes available.
Last month, GM had announced that it would be closing 2,600 dealerships overall by 2010, and this is the first round of those closures.
While these closures will give some relief to GM, their effect on the dealerships' communities will not be so positive, as many find themselves out of work.
GM spokeswoman Susan Garontakos said the company will not make public a list of dealers to be cut, leaving the decision to release information to individual business owners.

Yesterday it was Chrysler and today GM.
Is Ford going to make an announcement Tomorrow?
From what I read so far, I think they wont follow suit.
at 07:26 on May 23rd, 2009
That really depends on where our economy goes and so far we have not seen the worst, at least as far as unemployment goes.

No ford is fine. I work for A GMC/FORD/NISSAN dealer as A tech and FORD is still in good shape.I think GM will also be O K after restructure(bankrupt or not). The govmnt. has forced A new type of auto industry on the makers and consumers. Now youll be able to buy American thats made in CHINA. thanks to idiots that didnt start drilling for our own oil 5- 8 yrs. ago, now we are crippled relying still on hugo's oil.
GOD BLESS AMERICA

I wonder if there are any idiots at GM and Chrysler who didn't do (or stick with) hybrids, more efficient vehicles and EVs. But let's blame it on eco-hippies 'cause that's easier. This was going to happen (oil supply problems) eventually and all the big three could think about was quarter over quarter SUV profits instead of thinking longer term, like Toyota did.
at 11:08 on May 18th, 2009
That's why Toyota is getting over 2 billion from the Japanese government. They have over 120 days supply of hybrids........ they think long term.....lol
at 20:34 on May 18th, 2009
We are Americans This is what happen when people like you give there money to Japanese Companies move to Japan if you like what they do fo you so much. I remember when Americans took Pride in there Country too bad they let people that don't feel that way have a voice I guess we have freedom of speech here too what about Japan?
at 12:43 on May 21st, 2009
YES LETS BUY AMERICAN! THATS MADE IN MEXICO AND LETS PAY FULL PRICE GOOD IDEA GUYS! WHO'S REALLY GETTING RIPPED OFF HERE?
THE VIBE IS THE TOYOTA MATRIX SO WHO IS BUYING JAPAN CARS?
YEAH LETS BLAME JAPAN?
POOR GM
MOST PEOPLE BUY TOYOTA BECAUSE THEY MAKE GOOD, RELIABLE CARS.
WHO BOUGHT DAE-WOO AND PUT GM BADGES ON IT?
NOT TOYOTA.
at 11:56 on June 9th, 2009
Both the Vibe and Matrix are made by New United Motor Manufacturing, (NUMMI) a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota to build vehicles in the United States in Fremont CA.
at 10:24 on May 29th, 2009
Yes..blame the Jap's! How DARE they come into the North American market and offer up higher quality at a better price, especially in a free market! The NERVE!
at 16:32 on May 20th, 2009
Is there any of you dumasses that think they know something, and that think toyota is so smart know that (toyota) lost more than 8.6 billion first quarter. Which you are correct that does make them #1.
And furthermore if you support foreighn products would you please move there so we don't have to listen to your stupid ass.

Bodi,
Have you ever checked the back of your TV or the tags on your clothing you might be surprised that you yourself have purchased items not made in Canada or the US so I guess that would mean that you to must leave the country along with everyone else.
We now live in a WORLD ECONOMY, if one country is hurt then the rest are effected by it.
Have a safe flight, on a plane built in N.Amercia with parts made in China.
at 07:37 on May 23rd, 2009
You have a good point. I live in South Calif and you would be surprised how uneducated so many of our fellow citizens are. Too many for so long have been caught up in the me, me, me, what's in it for me and dealing with their lives on a very superficial level accumulating all the toys they could by borrowing money they didn't have and now the cheques come due. It will be many many years, if it is at all possible for the United States to come back to some sort of stable economic environement. We have been a very greedy nation and we must pay for that. It's always feels good to blame the government, to blame the auto manufacturers and everyone else for what is essentially our own failings. We the people have failed.

Toyota is presently suffering the largest loss it has had in 70 years. Sales of Toyota are off more than Ford or GM in May. Toyota has been working to get a market share of the SUV and Truck business for years. Those Land Rovers, Tundras, 470, FJs, Nissan Armadas, Titans, etc burn as much or more gas than any American made SUV ! Toyota just announced that they have stopped all construction on their Prius plant in Mississippi, as they cannot sell what they are building now, and are losing $5000 per vehicle. You must be the only one who thinks they are thinking longer term, they just forced their CEO to step down.
at 15:22 on June 8th, 2009
Yeah, thats exectly the reason toyota cant give away a toyota prius hybrid with gas @$2.25 a gallon. The hybrid is not the answer!
at 05:24 on June 10th, 2009
toyota went for trucks and is losing its shirt now.....its not the manufactures fault they build what the people want to buy and its been suvs and trucks forever even the soccer moms did not want to look like a "mom" in a mini van so bought a tahoe!!!!! You have to build what the public wants to buy even the stars drove nothing but gas guzzlers
at 21:32 on May 21st, 2009
Is everyone here that brainwashed that they think it is the governments fault? 100 years or a major company and not much profit to show for it. It is not the governments fault they don't bail out a failing company. The attitude that we have to save these dogs in order to protect the countless number of jobs is insane and the reason they did not restructure decades ago. Build a better car for cheaper and you are off to the races. Take away the ridiculous wages and demands the auto unions demand, take away the leadership that does not strive for a better economic model. SAD.
at 10:08 on May 15th, 2009
I am a general manager at a Ford dealer...we arent going any where and have big plans for the rest of 2009. Not taking the bail out was the best decision we ever made and we have customers that have switched to Ford for that reason!
at 12:36 on May 15th, 2009
Clarification: Ford mortgaged their assets in 2004 for fantastic rates and built a huge cash war chest for the future foreseeing the inevitable downturn the Big 3 were facing. For the record investment bankers priced and closed those transactions.
Watch out who you throw in the firing path the next time you complain about bankers. They have kept Ford alive.
at 04:03 on May 17th, 2009
The bankers are what put us in this recession in the first place. Their poor decision making and stupidity in giving out loans to people who should never have had them in the first place. That brought the credit crunch and people were unable to buy vehicles and in turn put the big 3 in a bigger hole and caused this dominoe effect of a recession. So I wouldn't quite say they have kept Ford or anyone else alive. Instead you should thank us the tax payer for keeping your job alive. Moron
at 14:36 on June 3rd, 2009
I have to respectfully disagree with your statement that the bankers
at 20:26 on May 22nd, 2009
It's also the investment banks that speculated on the price of oil and drove it up to $4.00/gallon. Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase were skimming $1.00/gallon profit during that oil price bubble. These vultures have set aside all the billions the government gave them and have bought all the oil they can with it. They are preparing to manipulate the oil market again this summer. They will of course bullsh*t everybody with the supply and demand line. It's all garbage May all these bankers all burn in HELL.
at 12:50 on May 15th, 2009
sKOBS:
I congratulate you on your decision making ability.
Moron.

bullsh!t , ford got a huge loan before the auto industry sank, please tell the truth, no wonder people had car dealers, I am a salesmen for GM, we know that ford took a huge loan. But they will not say that, they just say that they managed their money well.
at 17:58 on May 15th, 2009
What do you think mortgaging is -------- A LOAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There was no lie in the post
at 04:01 on May 16th, 2009
did ford get the money from the government? we the people are the government. the gov. does not own part of ford. the reason i buy ford & gm is because they have dealerships every 20-25 mi. i live in a rural area & it is 60-100 mi. to foreign dealers. if gm & ford put their dealers every 60-100 mi. then i may have to look at buying a foreign car made in the u.s. toyota has a plant in princeton indiana & georgetown ky. i am confused about what is domestic & what is foreign. canadian gm, mexican ford? ross perot should have gotten elected.
at 00:04 on May 18th, 2009
boo hoo hoo
at 07:45 on May 18th, 2009
ford did get a loan but not from the goverment ,the truth is ford got equity loans on all plants and everything they own that is how they got thier money they also opened up an extra 300,000 shares of stock to raise another 10million or billion that was sold within the first 2 days and the only reason i know this is i am the used car manager at a ford store and we also had a chrysler store now closed and a gm store barely opened we are now looking into buying another franchise to take over at the chrysler store.
at 18:42 on May 15th, 2009
Moron? Well guess it fits, I mean its exactly what I think of when people go to a public site and then bash the very people who'se posts they are there to read.
at 07:47 on May 23rd, 2009
Well, they obviously weren't very loyal to their previous brand then. I have worked for GM since 1980 and I will say if you like a certain make of vehicle whether it be a Ford or GM whatever, for the most part you just don't switch that easy. At least you wait a while and see what lays ahead. This is not over until it's over.

Did I miss something here about Ford?? Remind me again just how much money they took from the government just a few years ago when THEY were in too deep...My God we have such short memories (i.e. 911). The only difference between the condition of the respective US automakers is the date on the calender that they hit bottom. Fortunately for Ford, the economy wasn't as far in the toilet when they bottomed out or they would be in the same boat as the others. All we ever do anymore in this country is whine and complain. Turn of the over sensationalized TV sets, leave the rubber band on the paper today, go out and buy a new outfit, take your kids to get an ice cream cone, go outside and get a breath of fresh air, quit dwelling on the negatives and live your lives. I think that you will find that your stress levels will go down and your outlook on the world will improve. Things are only as bad as we make them. Worry about what you can personally control and roll-on.
