General Motors, in its continued attempt to become solvent, is closing 1,100 dealerships, and has already begun to alert those affected. There is no public list of the closures yet. This announcement comes on the heels of Chrysler's closure announcement yesterday.

We'll post a link to the full dealer closing list as it becomes available.

Last month, GM had announced that it would be closing 2,600 dealerships overall by 2010, and this is the first round of those closures.

While these closures will give some relief to GM, their effect on the dealerships' communities will not be so positive, as many find themselves out of work.

GM spokeswoman Susan Garontakos said the company will not make public a list of dealers to be cut, leaving the decision to release information to individual business owners.

All of the years of mismanagement and GM management burying their heads in the sand have finally come home to roost. I worked in a GM dealership for 15 years. GM was foolish to bury the electric car they developed called the EV-1

GM had the technology long before anyone else. They made foolish and costly moves like car leases with inflated residuals, vehicles that totally sucked like the AZTEK...ack....And tried to inflate sales and profit numbers by selling massive amounts of cars to fleet accounts.

Remember all the earnings re-statements in 2001-2003....red flags??...Yep....

For years, analysts predicted GM's downfall if the market dropped below 16 million units per year. WHat did GM do to prepare?? Nothing. They hoped SUV's would continue to sell and they hoped they could catch a break from the uinons. Dream on. Too many brands and too many dealers. They knew this for years and did nothing. Now they have to fix it all in a few months. It will not happen. GM as we know it is dead. Break the UAW, and bring back a much smaller and more efficent company. Thats the only way it will work.

i used to work in the parts dept of a chrysler dealership back in the early 90s and that

same dealership is now targeted for closure. I now work in the parts dept of a Chevy

dealership and concern is high in the entire building. We work hard , we give it our

best effort to keep business rolling and customers happy and returning.

who knows whats going to happen but we have to play a waiting game. And

unemployment is never a happy thought , but its a sad possibility.

I am so bummed....

I called many of the Chrylser dealerships because I thought I could help out at least some of the people loosing their jobs as I myself am looking to hire people into my company. All and I mean all of them said they're not going anywhere and everything is perfectly fine. Are they bluffing or what?

Question...what about rebates and warranties that GM still owes the dealerships its closing.  With Chrysler, they are in bankruptcy protection and are in alot of ways off the hook with paying rebates and incentives back to the dealers.  Since GM is making this decision before BK, will they still have to pay rebates etc?

How does everyone think this might efffect the suppliers that are contracted with the big 3?  For example, the same company makes axles for Ford, GM and Chrysler, with GM and Chrysler stopping production does that leave Ford holding the bag?  Dont see how having only one out of three still producing will be enough for some of the suppliers to keep afloat...

Its sad, until every American is on there hands and knees America will go down. We need to support our country.Unless you work for the auto industry you don't even know what you are talking about, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.Proud to drive an AMERICAN CAR. BUY AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!!BUSH ADMINISTRATION FOR 8 YEARS SOLD OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!

I would rather buy American, believe me.  But the product has to be competitive in price, quality, and features.  Those are the cold hard facts.

Do the American cars meet that criteria?  That is the bottom line.

Yeah, hammer the big 3 for putting plants over seas; the American people are to blame for that when we decided we didn't have to support domestic products.  And read up on J.D Powers and Consumer reports, did you know they weren't reviewing Toyotas just giving them great ratings till they got people complaining.  Also were all the Toyota experts on here aware they got millions from their goverment, so were does their money go?  Finally just hope nothing happens in this country were someone from you know is involved like 9-11 or Katrina when GM, Ford, and Chrysler gave millions in cash and vehicles and your better companys put how sorry they are on their website.  Congrats you got it all figured out!

my opinion of all of this is that its all about GREED! All vehicles are overpriced, not just GM, Ford, Chrysler. All of them have priced theirselves out of a job. I worked for a Toyota dealer as a tech, I own my own shop now and I to see the slow down, and my heart goes out to the techs in the shops that are on flat rate, I know when there is no work there is no money either. Its not the peoples fault that work in the dealers it is the CEO's.

If there are fewer GM and Chrysler dealeships and you have to travel furher to get to them, aren't you liable to pass several import dealers and ford dealer that you just might shop at rather than drive the extra miles to a GM or Chrysler Dealership.

Fewer dealerships will mean less competition, and higher prices for GM and Chrysler so The imports win again.

Its not where these cars are built at its where the dollar ends at.We all know that GM Ford and Chrysler get cheaper labor in these other country's. But at the end of the deal and the cars sold the dollars do land in the banks here in the US not like Toyota, Nissan, Honda and so on. Ok some of the moneys pays Americans but its still Japanese at the end of the day I dont care how many Camrys they close the hood on over here in the US there a Japanese auto maker.Look around our homes 2/3 of the stuff comes from out side the US. This is true I go in to Sears to buy some T-Shirts a 5 pack of Hanes for $30.00 I go back to Walmart 5 pack of Hanes $9.00 Im thinking what the HELL but the $30.00 T-shirts are from here in the US the $9.00 are from Mexico is our Unions causing this. If I buy USA only is this the price we pay Im pretty sure Walmart out sells Sears on the T-Shirts Bankruptcy may just be the only way to start over with new wages and all We are feeding the world and now our own are hunggry but Can Fred afford to make 20.00 hr and not 35,00  speaking of Ford a guy who pushs a broom is paid 35.00 hr and so the 500 is built in Mexico you wanta guess what that guy gets to swep up over there.

The heartbeat of America will soon become the pride of China.

I don't know who is in a worse predicament - The dealers who made the cut or those that were eliminated. Decreasing dealer-base is not a solution..... These cuts are merely a haphazard attempt to squeeze more money out of the federal government. Not one of the members of government, who are overseeing the maintenance and distribution of bailout moneys to the auto industry, have an ounce of knowledge relative to this business.

These cuts are simply prolonging the inevitable decline of the "Big 3" automakers. (And yes, include Ford in this statement.) The government is throwing good money at a helpless situation and they will never be repaid.

So, who gets screwed - Ultimately us, the taxpayer. (Same-old situation.)

You need to close GM Dealers so GM can build the number of vehicles that their consumers want. Its called supply and demand. Have you seen those rebates for thousands of dollars and year end close out deals. That money comes off the bottom line of that vehiicle built. Now if you look at the Japanese Manufactures like Honda they are out of vehicles usually by July before the new model year is introduced. They generally get full price. Honda not the car dealer. This is how smart the manufacture is and how dumb the person owning or running the Honda dealership really are. It is time for Americans to step up and start buying AMERICAN. It is time for our American companies to start hiring Americans to build their cars. It is time for Americans to start working for fair compensation knowing that their not the ones to put the money down or take the risk to build a company. And time for the lazy Americans that bitch about Mexicans coming into the US for work when their own quality of work is surpassed by these people who have not the education of the American people. When buying an import vehicle remember where the money ends up at the bottom line. THINK ABOUT IT! GET AMERICA BACK!

the uaw  was aware of the downturn 5 years ago, so was the big 3 ,nobody thought that it was going to be this bad.i am not woring about the big 3, i am an uneployed dealer mechanic, the big 3 have been scewing america for too long. the goverment will bail out the rich, but the middle class can go to the poor house . it is a scam the goverment knew it was comming, it started with nafta, and continues today buy guns and ammo and get ready for the end.

Anyone have any idea why GM won't release a complete listing of dealerships losing their franchise contracts?  What's the big secret anyway?  Kind of like not telling someone you are pregnant..... gonna find out eventually.  Why wait?

Oh, and btw....who cares whose fault all this is?  Water under the bridge.  Instead of blaming and pointing fingers, how about the taxpaying public come up with solutions?  I think it boils down to one thing and one thing only.  Greed got ALL of the failing industries where they are.  They need to do what the average person does.  Live within your means and PAY your friggin bills YOURSELF.

It is funny that I ran accross this blog..

This mess started over 15 years ago when the manufacture allowed dealers to open a dealership on every corner. We have too many products too many dealerships..Simple really!

Greed by the lenders that made it to easy to get money for vehicles that people could not afford.

Ford Motor Company has one of the strongest lines ups and now has a vehicle that every one..all walks of life. It took a man that came from Boeing aircraft to idenify the problem and fix it!  My uncles and all of my cousins builds cars..GM vehilces and the bottom line..and they will tell you..The quality has been horrible..It now is a little late to rebuild the confidence of the amercian public...It takes major restructuring and time...This problem did not happen over night.. Ford started in 2005 and now after 4 years they are in the drivers seat. GM and Chrysler is getting what they deserve..

After the dust settles..all will be fine....Bush,Obama,Clinton..what ever....I look toward the great future not rehash the past....

People like me find ways to make the USA a better place..Some people on this blog are so negitive....They are the part of the problem..We have a great nation..Lets all do our part to make the world a better place..

Stop the blame game..it does not change the future!!

And last..I would bet that 50% of the people on this blog does not vote..So if you do not vote..shut up! I am sure some moran will slam me...and deep down in side when that person slams me he/she will put their head on their pillow and lose sleep..Why? Becuase they know I am right!

So instead of slaming people..Help some oen that vcan not help them selves....Help the the help less....Tell some one in your life taht you care about them...Try to be a better person..Better American..

If you do not like it here leave..the borders go both ways!

Good night and good luck to you all...I love my family..my America ...my God and my Friends!

Has anyone noticed that most of all the auto manufacturers and their parts suppliers that are still in business and doing well are not unionized.

Closing dealerships do not help GM or Chrysler. I just retired from the car business after 31 years, and I tell you why they are closing them. Obama and his crew of so called automotive experts have decided that Toyota and Honda are making money with less dealerships, so GM and Chrysler should be able to as well. It is true that import dealerships make a higher profit per car than domestic dealerships, but that does not effect the factories at all. The dealers pay wholesale prices. If Obama would just get out of the car business and let the factories borrow a few bucks, they would pull themselves out of this funk and get back to making cars.

I am a ASE Certified mechanic and I have watched as ford years ago started building high quality cars , closing down factories that only built one car to build  factories  that now  build 6 cars in each. Ford has made the right changes , they are building great quality cars and trucks. They  are the future for the Automotive Industry. You can do the research or not thats on you. I was a GM fan for ever but they choose the wrong road many years ago.

Who can explain the rationale behind pulling franchises?  Neither GM nor Chrysler will save a dime on this stupid move.  Why are they throwing all the small business folks and their employees under the bus.  If there are too many dealerships for the remaining brands, the market would take care of that.  But over time not with a single stroke.  My heart just sinks when I think of the 2000 +- family businesses who made the American Auto Industry great and now face ruin.  Nearly 100,000 jobs lost in a couple days.  For what?

YOU KNOW THE AMERICAN CAR DEALER SHOULD LOOK IN THE MIRROR BECAUSE THEY CREATED THIS MESS THEMSELVES.  THEY ONLY WAS THINKING ABOUT THE BOTTOMLINE NOT THE CUSTOMER AT ALL.  WHY I MAKE THIS STATEMENT I HAD 3 DODGES, 1 I STILL HAVE AND 2 CHEVY'S WITH THE DODGES ITS THE BRAKES, THE SUNROOF AND THE OIL IN THE REAR END HAVE TO BE CHANGED EVERY 30,000 MILES THE 2007 CARAVAN I HAD TO DO THE LEMON LAW ON.  THE CHEVY CHEVETTE THE FLOOR ROTTEN OUT AND AS YOU RIDE OR DRIVE YOU BETTER NOT DROP ANYTHING BECAUSE IT WAS ON THE HIGHWAY THE OTHER A HHR 2005 NOTHING BUT TROUBLE NOT SOMETHING IS RATTLING AND NO ONE KNOW WHAT IT IS.  I FEEL SORRY FOR THE WORKER BUT I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER AMERICAN MAKE AUTO UNLESS THE IMPROVE ON ITS TRADE IN VALUE AND THEIR QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCTS.  ALSO A STATEMENT WAS MADE THAT WOMEN BLACK AND HISPANIC WAS THE CAUSE OF THE AUTO FAILURE BECAUSE THEY BUY FOREIGN MADE CARS WHAT A DUMP STATEMENT I FEEL SORRY FOR THE FOOL WHO MADE THAT STATEMENT.  ALSO THE STATEMENT ABOUT THE UNION BREAKING CAR MAKER WHAT A JOKE WHAT BROKE THE CAR MAKER IS SENDING THE JOBS OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND TRYING TO GET THE SAME PRICE FOR THEIR NON-RELIABLE VEHICLE.

Don't blame the goverment , blame greed and not bringing autos up to date and the UAW for wanting it ALL and no give back until it was to late. My wife and I live very well on the money we make, have NO credit cards and pay as we go for EVERTHING.     THINK BEFORE YOU SPEND.

IT IS MY BELIEF THAT, IN SPITE OF AUTOMOTIVE, PLANT CLOSEINGS, SHUTING DOWN DEALER SHIPS, AND OTHER MEANS OF SAVEING  THE AUTO INDUSTRY ARE TO NO AVAIL, NOW ADD ON TOP OF T HAT THE NEW GAS MILEAGE STANDARDS BY 2012.

IN SUMMARY, MASSIVE JOB LOSSES THAT WILL NEVER COME BACK, THE RAPID FALL OF CONSUMER CREDIT RATEINGS, ADD TO THAT THE BAILED OUT  BANKS, WHO WILL PROBALLY NEVER ISSUE A LOAN, ON LESS THAN  PERFECT  CREDIT. MANY DEALERS ARE TRYING T O SWITCH T O SELLING USED CARS, MOST TOWNS ALREADY HAVE A USED CAR LOT ON EVERY CORNER, IF YOU CAINT' GET LOANS FOR NEW CAR'S YOU SURELY WILL NOT GET A LOAN FOR A HIGH DOLLAR USED, CAR  THAT USUALLY CARRY A HIGH LOAN RA TE , MORE PROFIT  MAR GIN FOR THE SELLER, BU T ALSO HIGHER DEFAULT RAT E, FOR MANY OF THESE LOANS WOULD BE HIGH RISK

JUNKER'S AND CLUNKERS ARE ALL THAT THE AVERAGE DRIVER CAN AFFORD. NOW YOU HAVE THE HIWAYS. FULL OF HIGH DOLLAR CARS SAY 50.000 AND UP BEING HIT BY 2000 &3000 $ CARS BAD FOR THE INSURANCE MAR KET 'S

ALSO CREDIT CARD COMPANIES, ARE NEXT IN LINE TO FAIL, MOST ALL OF THEM ARE JUST BANKS, WHO ISSUE  THESE CARDS, PEOPLE CANNOT PAY, AND THAT IS T HE FIRST BILL THEY WILL LET GO, AND ONCE PRESSURED, THE CONSUMER WILL JUST HAVE  TO GO BANK RUPT LIKE CHRYSLER AND GM, AND A VERY LONG LIST T O SOON FOLLOW, CARD COMPANIES MADE  THE I R BANKRUPT CY REFORM, TO SOON A COUPLE OF YEAS AGO, NOW THEIR HANDS ARE  TIED

WE  MUST BE PREPARED T O LIVE LIKE THE WALTON'S , AMISH, AND MINNIONITES,

BUT SAID THING IS, WE NOW DON'T KNOW HOW       DRW WOODS

Wow, after reading through 4 pages, much of it drivel, I must say that I'm extremely happy to be managing a Lexus dealership.  Let's see.. I could make $75K down the road to manage a domestic, or double that to be one of the 5 managers in a Lexus store.  Our gross profits are up year over year, there is no way in hell we're going to close.  There's something to be said for a dealer network of fewer than 250 dealers.  There are a total of 13 in all of New England.  And that $150K goes along way to help out MY economy.  I spend it on local restaurants, domestic travel, and support my local businesses.  Go ahead, let the Capitalist-bashing commence, but it's MY money and I will spend it when and where I choose (until the Neo-Socialist Nobama tells me he wants to give it to the Criminaliens and baby factories so they're not put out by having to find employment or legalizing)
