GM Dealer Closing List: 1,100 General Motors Dealerships

General Motors, in its continued attempt to become solvent, is closing 1,100 dealerships, and has already begun to alert those affected. There is no public list of the closures yet. This announcement comes on the heels of Chrysler's closure announcement yesterday.

We'll post a link to the full dealer closing list as it becomes available.

Last month, GM had announced that it would be closing 2,600 dealerships overall by 2010, and this is the first round of those closures.

While these closures will give some relief to GM, their effect on the dealerships' communities will not be so positive, as many find themselves out of work.

GM spokeswoman Susan Garontakos said the company will not make public a list of dealers to be cut, leaving the decision to release information to individual business owners.

this list appears to be missing at least 2 others I have heard. Condie in Kingston and Upper Canada motors in Morrisburg, the latter for sure as was written in local paper.

It would be a mistake and point to only the auto manufacturers as being a cause of the possiblity of their demise, but you must look at the whole economy and where American's have been heading for years. Our total greed and the idea that we can borrow, and keep borrowing and it would be never ending has hit us. We were once the great creditor nation and now we are the largest debtor nation in the world. We are approaching a third world state, at least many of us now living here will never make it to the so called middle class. The middle class is vanishing and America better start to get ready for what lays ahead.

I am very disappointed that the outcome of GM  has come down to this closing dearlships especially mine not yet has anybody notify me on what to do about where to go for service.

Thanks for the memories GM. I use to say it will be a cold day in Hell before I buy foreign but it seems like Hell is starting to thaw out!

Agreed. A friend of mine has worked at Don Howson chev for 25 years, and they are closing it down. Its a shame cause it has been one of the top dealers in Toronto for years. GM closed Hawley Pontiac down too, who also had great succes for many. It is unfair.

The transmission on my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix totally destroyed itself at 68,000 km, The cost to repair at Frost Motors $4,200. Did GM or Frost pay for any of the cost because the transmission was faulty? A big NO!!!!. I told GM at the time if they wanted to know who their enemy was and why their market share was shrinking they had only to look in the mirror. You reap what you sow.

North American is a s good as Japanese. Yea ok, lets see, my Chyrsler minvan blew up its transmission at 105,000km, my Ford Ranger pick up truck's transmission made ti to a whopping 180,000 kms, woohoo. Oh by the way my Mazda now has 410,000 kms and still going.

All i have to say to Chrysler, Ford and GM is good bye.

Hello   FORD OWNES MAZDA!!!!

Maqracer-

You are misinformed. Ford only has a 13% stake in Mazda, and does not own them. At their peak, Ford only had a 33% stake, before selling most of it off for needed cash to help sustain them through falling demand of Ford vehicles.

Alot of the comments on here are HILARIOUS. Hilariously stupid, that is. GM was losing a ton of money BEFORE the recession hit...Bush was quietly pumping billions into a company that makes CRAP CARS. It just took a full blown recession to finally expose GM for the worthless company they are. I've workied in the service department of both Chrysler and GM, and I can tell you first hand that I will NEVER buy either, no matter how much they are discounted. Chrysler cant build a trans to save their life and GM builds engines that leak oil and coolant at 20k miles. Gimme a break...you cant blame people for buying an import.  Why would I, or anyone for that matter, burden myself with a crap American car, just to help stimulate the local economy, when you can buy an import that'll last twice as long and still support the same economy since most imports are now made here in the US anyway? For those who are computer savvy, look up / dowload a documentary called "Who Killed The Electric Car?". It'll show you exactly what kind of company GM really is. We reap what we sow. Oh, and for those who want to dispute what "American" is...Mazda has several assembly plants in the US...even one in Michigan, Honda also has several assembly plants in the US...2 of which are in Ohio, Subaru has a plant in Indiana, and Toyota has multiple assy plants, several of which are in Alabama.

The 'confirmed list' provided by 'anonomous' does not include Brian Condie Pontiac Buick in Kingston Ontario so his list is not complete.

Everyone has an opinion or an excuse.

HERES MINE.

A car is a car.

I have read many of these comments, However no one has even come close to the problem.

There is no such thing as a world market when some people make $0.08 an hour and others make $25.00. (example).

Being poor in this country is like being rich in Mexico. That's why their poor come here.

The problem is those making $25.00 an hour are buying more of the $0.08 an hour imports than he can afford and nobody is exporting their $25.00 an hour products.

The result of that is exactly what we have now.

The factory where the $25.00 an hour person works closes. He/She loses their job and declares bankrupcy.

So until that changes. Nothing changes

We need to put up a wall and everybody needs to buy the products they make.

Look, GM is junk product.  There are a couple exceptions.  I don't give a damn

about protecting American labor or product.  GM took too long to improve itself

and suffered the most in a dire economic time.  No excuses, time for change.

I will not move to another country because of this view.  Thank God this entire nation

is not composed of midwest blue collar viewpoints.

Good news! Some of these dealers, such as Hawley Pontiac in Mississauga, ON, are really useless and have horrible customer service. There are many reasons why GM has gone down this path; however the way that these dealerships treat customers is one of the big ones.
