Search giant Google is consolidating its projects, eliminating some in order to re-allocate resources to those it considers more popular or more scalable. Amongst those getting the ax are Jaiku, Dodgeball, Notebook, and Google Video.
For example, video upload capability to Picasa is replacing Google Video, and Notebook users are redirected to Google Docs and Google Bookmarks.
Jaiku will olive on as an open-source application via the Google App Engine.
Dodgeball, which Google bought a few years ago, is toast in the next few months, since Twitter basically stole its user base.
Also, Google Catalog Search is made redundant by Google Book Search
he clock started ticking on Google Video when it bought YouTube in 2006. Starting, "in a few months," Google Video will no longer allow user uploads. That makes sense considering YouTube's function. In 2007, Google turned off users' access to paid videos on Google Video. It should be noted that Google recently added video upload capability to Picasa Web Albums, so clearly execs at the company realize that there can be different video services for different needs. See the Google Video Blog.
