Google Caffeine: Google Changes Search Engine Algorythm

Google Caffeine has launched in test mode. Google revealed their new search engine development today, codenamed "Caffeine." A major change is the engine's ability to use different verb forms. If you're an SEO person, check your web properties against the link above- you may need to make changes of your own.

In a blog posting late Monday, Google Inc. says the new engine, code-named "Caffeine," will be faster, more accurate and more comprehensive.

Google is opening up an online preview for web developers and power searchers to give feedback on Caffeine. For now, although the new website looks the same as the current search engine and it would be hard for regular users to notice the change, Caffeine ranks results differently, and can therefore have a huge impact on businesses that rely on Google results to bring in traffic. It is expected that SEO specialists are going to have to learn the new formula to Pagerank to keep themselves at the top.

It is interesting that the public testing of Caffeine was announced two weeks after Microsoft Corp. replaced Yahoo Inc's search engine with Bing, one of Google's main competitors. When asked the question, is Google giving itself a makeover in response to Bing, Matt Cutts, a Google software engineer answered on his blog,

"I love competition in search and want lots of it, but this change has been in the works for months."

Even with Microsoft's acquisition of Yahoo! Search, Google continues to dominate the search space. Bing will change nothing over the short term. However, I do like the fact that Microsoft and Yahoo! are teaming up in an effort to gain search marketshare. Whether or not they're successful - only time will tell.

Given the acquisition, Yahoo! Search will assume the position of a traditional content distribution network. It's likely the sponsored platform will roll off AdCenter and not the Yahoo! Panama platform. Keep in mind to overcome or compete with Google one must address AdWords. For without gaining sponsored search marketshare it is a lost cause. It's they're biggest revenue source and will continue to be. This is what Bing needs to dial in on to truly compete with the GIANT, http://www.google.com.
