Google Monopoly: Monopoly City Streets Site Down on Launch Day

Google Monopoly launched today, but has proven too popular for its own good: the Monopoly City Streets site is currently down due to traffic overload. So we're talking about a lot of traffic, even with all the other 9/9/09 stuff competing for eyeballs today.

Hasbro and Google's Monopoly City Streets allows players to play a live, worldwide tournament verison of Monopoly, using any street in the world.

It’s an ambitious venture that we’ll confess to being fairly excited about: players will literally be able to buy any street in the world, and compete with every other player on the “board”. You start with 3 million Monopoly dollars, and can build not only hotels and houses but also football stadiums, castles and skyscrapers, reports the UK’s Guardian. Downing Street in the UK will cost $231,000, while Pennsylvania Avenue will cost $2 million.

Monopoly itself is based on the real streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and has a rich history of its own.

I tried Monopoly City Streets. When the servers weren't down it looked like it could have some potential. I managed to snag a few streets near the capital in Madison, but it took forever. I hope they're getting it fixed. There's another game that I'm ridiculously addicted to called Parallel Kingdom where you also claim territory on a Google Map. It's a little simpler and its been out for a few months. I'm pretty sure its still free in iTunes.
