Google has launched the Nexus One Google phone, which will be sold online via the brand-new Google Nexus One site. The phone will cost $529 unlocked, or $179 with a two-year T-Mobile plan.  It features a noise-cancelling microphone, transcribed voicemail, and voice-activated core applications. But is Nexus One better than Droid?

Google says that the Nexus One wil be available on Verizon later this year, which should ease the sting of launching Nexus One just a month after Verizon and Motorola launched the Droid.

Here are the Nexus One specs:

  • 5MP camera with LED flash
  • Qualcomm QSD 8250 1GHz processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 512MB Flash drive (built in)
  • 4GM Micro SD card
  • 3.7" touchscreen display
  • Weight: 130g with battery
  • Talk time: up to 7 hours on 3G/10 hours on 2G
  • Web use: up to 6.5 hours on Wi-Fi
  • Full tech specs

So, which is better, Nexus One or Droid? This is a pertinent question, since now Google is competing with itself. Nexus One is thinner, but has has no physical keyboard. Also, the Nexus one is about $20 cheaper across all options than Droid, though buying either unlocked is still more expensive than buying a netbook. Also, Nexus One runs Android 2.1, the latest OS, though I can't imagine that Droid won't get the update somewhat soon. NExus One is an unlocked GSM phone, which makes it easier to travel with. Verizon is a better network that T-Mobile, though, for those who won't be carrying their smartphone abroad anytime soon.

They strike me as fairly similar- since I'm in Canada at the moment, I can't really get my hands on either, so a head-to-head mobile showdown will have to take place south of the border.

The Nexus One is US-only at the moment, which sucks for early adopters, but is great for those who don't want to deal with the inevitable quality-control issues that accompany a mobile phone launch like this.

Mr. Querioz said that while Google was pleased with the success of Android so far, Google had worked closely with HTC to push the envelope on what is possible on a device.

Nexus one is NOT US-only. According to the Term of sales, consumers from other countries can purchase the device.

Not in real life, alas. Non-US visitors to google.com/phone are greeted with "Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country."
According to TOS, yeah, we have permission to buy it... but not the means.
