Google confirms its support for net neutrality against claims that it has changed its views. A Wall Street Journal article published on Monday suggests that Google Inc has been in close discussions with major phone and cable companies about services that would fast track Google's content.

Historically Google has been one of the strongest supporters of net neutrality, or the principle that Internet users should have control over the content and applications they use.

Richard Whitt, Google's Washington-based telecom and media counsel, wrote in a blog post early Monday that the Journal's report is apparently based on a misunderstanding of the company's offer to place so-called "edge servers" within the networks of Internet service providers.

Edge servers take some of the burden off of the main server, to facilitate faster sharing of information, but do not influence the content that is presented.

Google maintains that it has in no way altered its support of net neutrality and continues to advocate for more specific laws that will help to protect Internet users.
