Gregor Mendel: Father of Genetics Born July 20, 1822

Gregor Mendel, who is credited with founding the study of genetics through his work with peas, is celebrated on his birthday with a Google Doodle.

Gardener, beekeeper, priest, and scientist, Gregor Mendel studied the propagation of thousands of pea plants. He gave us Mendel's Laws of Inheritance:

  • The Law of Segregation
  • The Law of Independent Assortment

See: Mendel's Experiments in Plant Hybridization, considered a... wait for it... seminal work in genetics. Mendel's laws laid the groundwork for our understanding of inherited traits.

Though Gregor Mendel died in 1884, his work would be rediscovered (if not yet fully understood) in 1900.
