Hammerson unveils plans to build a new shopping centre in Croydon
Hammerson reveals its plans for a 1.6 million square feet shopping mecca.
The Brent Cross owner follows rival Westfield, which revealed its plans earlier this month. Hammerson wants to create shops, restaurants, homes, a hotel, five public squares and new car park and around 5,000 jobs.
Hammerson's £1 billion development, revealed here for the first time, will create a Whitgift Quarter — incorporating North End, the existing Whitgift Centre and Centrale, Hammerson’s other shopping centre in the town.
Managing director of retail Lawrence Hutchings said: “Our plans are designed to make the centre of Croydon great again.”
Both Westfield and Hammerson will progress their plans through public consultation and will submit planning applications later this year. A final decision on who will be the successful party will have to be made by the council and London Mayor Boris Johnson.
