Twinkie/Ding Dong/Wonder Bread Alert: Hostess Files for Chapter 11

Hostess, maker of Wonder Bread and mysterious snack foods such as Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Snowballs, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The easy joke: how can a company go broke selling Twinkies and Wonder Bread in America? The answer is fairly pedestrian: Hostess' production costs are too high. Whatever goes into a Twinkie is apparently pretty expensive.

Also, Hostess wants to cut union benefits. If Hostess can't come to an agreement with its employees' unions, it will try to reject union agreements altogether.

Hostess' spin on this is that it wants to emerge as "a highly competitive company that provides secure jobs for [its] employees". Hostess' definition of "secure" is obviously the subject of debate.

Is This the End of Twinkies?

Don't worry, Tallahassee: Twinkies will still get made. Hostess has secured $75 million in financing as it gets its kitchen in order. Ding Dongs, Wonder Bread, and, yes, even the oft-reviled Snowballs will also continue production.

While Hostess is on the ropes, will the Pizza Boomerang (sNSFW) fly onto American shores?
