How Sticky Is Membership on Facebook? Just Try Breaking Free
Social networking sites like Facebook are really great tools for most people, most of the time. Many users, though, don't take the time to familiarize themselves with the personal privacy functions and features. Almost all users seem to be unaware of the policies in effect (the most common Facebook issue being that people don't realize they're not allowed to know who visits their profile.)
So, people are constantly being hit with unfortunate circumstances simply because they didn't understand what was going on - up front, when they would have had a chance to deal with it.
The highlighted article below is interesting because it points out the need to either delete or secure unwanted information before that information accumulates into something too difficult to manage:
“It’s like the Hotel California,” said Nipon Das, 34, a director at a biotechnology consulting firm in Manhattan, who tried unsuccessfully to delete his account this fall. “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”
If you'll excuse me - I'll head on over to my Facebook account now to review my privacy settings and start deleting old messages...

Apparently deleting your Facebook account is like getting gum off of your shoe.
