Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer unveiled Hewlet Packard's (HP) new Slate Tablet PC at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada today. The unveiling seems to be a pre-emptive strike on Apple, who is slated, pardon the pun, to announce their tablet later this month on January 27.

The HP Slate is equipped with a myriad of technologies and functionality including Amazon's Kindle software, making it a potentially viable alternative to printed books, magazines, and other content mediums.

Ballmer showed off the Slate's Kindle software as he expressed the potential of the device as a realistic consumer platform saying, "this great little PC -- which will be available later this year -- I think many customers are going to be very excited about."

A price has yet to be set for the Slate but analysts are suggesting a price range sub-$500.
