Indonesia Imams Allow Facebook, Sort Of
The good news: you can log into Facebook in Indonesia. The bad news: That's about all you can do.
Indonesia's top Imams spent a few days talking about Facebook (which, statistically, they probably use: Facebook is the #1 visited site in Indonesia, bigger than Google), and decided that they'll keep it legal. However, Indonesian facebookers cannot flirt, gossip, ask intimate questions, or participate in "vulgar behavior", begging the question of what they actually are allowed to do.
On the upside, the fact that the 700 imams, which have created these guidelines after a two-day meeting, have recognized Facebook’s many upsides and permitted its usage - even if the guidelines are a bit unrealistic - is positive.
Most likely they realized that trying to stamp out the #1 site in the country was a fool's errand, and it was better to let the users police themselves, though the gossip police will be up against the toughest opponent of all: human nature.
