Ipad - The Apple Tablet Disappointing Deubt: Top 6 Reasons Not To Buy Ipad
The Ipad, Apple's new tablet device was announced and revealed today by Apple CEO Steve Jobs at a Live Event . The glorified press conference today was greeted  with the usual dramatic flair and anticipation that greets any new product launch by Apple.
Having seen the video of the Apple tablet and having reviewed the tech specs for the Ipad, Apple's new device, while sleek and sweet looking, seems to fall short of the mark.

And so here are the top 6 reasons not to buy the Apple Ipad, or at least wait until the second generation of the device rolls out.
Right now it seems that Ipad is really a bigger Iphone, designed to run mainly iphone apps and do some some standard things like watching youtube videos and listening to music on itunes and checking email, throw in some e-book functionality and it may be a hit but right now I am not believing the hype
Ipad Top 6 Reasons Not To Buy

  1. Does Not Run OS X, No Intel Processor: So the ipad is using a special Apple 1 Ghz Processor designed to conserve power but the trade off is running third party applications (with the exception of iphone apps) and the fact that it does not run OS X means Apple has placed the ipad firmly between an itouch and a lap top - very bizarre.
  2. Low Battery Life - The ipad claims 10 hours of battery life - umm yeah right.
  3. Form Factor: You need a separate device to prop up the ipad and the back has no rubber backing. Yikes. Typing on  flat surface is going to be tough
  4. No Flash: Youtube videos are fine but Apple seems to have a hate on for Flash - dont get it.
  5. Price: The 3G/Wifi version clocks in at $829 USD - The wifi only has a price tag of $429 USD. Plus, the data plans so if I already have an iphone, and a mac laptop, why would I need this thing?
  6. No Web Camera: The absence of a web camera makes no sense at all.

It is always a good idea to wait before buying any piece of new technology, Apple products included - companies need to time to see how the work in the market place, make adjustments, and release better versions.

#7: no multitasking. This is also an iPhone flaw, but still. Some of these will be addressed in the next version; in other words, "the version that comes out a week after you buy the first version". Wait.

At the moment, this device exists to sell accessories for this device.

Got to agree with this posting.  Apple really dropped the ball with this.  Netbooks are half the price and do the same thing.  No multitasking, camera, or flash are deal breakers.  There is no excuse for apple to omit these things.  While they'll cry that Flash is buggy and processor expensive, the fact is that flash isn't going away anytime soon.  They need to wake up and give the people what they want.

These are all fairly valid criticisms...if you're planning on buying a laptop. If you are in the market for a Kindle or another e-Reader, it's a different story. The basic model, with the $499 price point, is really all you need. And with WiFi becoming more and more common, there's really no need to get the 3G. If you travel a lot, it's perfect for the plane or the airport.

Will it cure cancer? Nope. And besides, every piece of technology is pretty much outdated the moment it's released. And yes...1st gen. Apple products are dangerous. But I'll tell ya, the iPad was pretty much everything I expected it to be (except for the name-- I thought it might be called the iSlate). It's nothing more than a glorified e-book. And that's alright, considering the Kindle's $489 price tag, I think it the iPad is a bargain.

I really love the concept of the ipad, for a technophobe woman like me, i think it's going to be perfect

Interesting, I worried more about lack off storage space and not being able to run Auto-Cat or other applications tht I use in the field such a Chemical engineering apps.

I think it is a great product though and the battery life, well we shall see. OS X would be nice n deed though.

As far as cameras goes, I use a high resolution camera and never my cell phone nor my computer to make pictures.

I think the single product that does it all, may not be the right way to go. A highly adaptive product with costome made functions and able to evolve over time may be far more desirable then the all in one.

Typing is not a problem, just takes some time to get used to it.

However. Jordan's number seven is a very important one here as well. A flaw I can not accept.

The idea is good though and yes I will wait for the second or third generation before I buy one.

For now the Mac. Pro may be the best product to use.

Paschen........"ot being able to run Auto-Cat or other applications tht I use in the field such a Chemical engineering apps.".........it's not designed as a macBook or iMac replacement. Apple adds to it's range and not replacements.........iPhone--->iPad--->macBook--->iMac.

J2B, just reading Books, News Papers and watching U-tube for $500.00 to $1,000.00 with e-mail is some what to expensive of a gadget.

I use my lab-top for just about every thing, including as a phone. The only thing I do not use it for is a camera.

I like the idea but not the limitations.

Paschen, I'm in full agreement with you.

hmmm... i think that in writing a review you have to take into account that a product is not always meant for your demographic. got an iphone and a laptop? you're right, this probably isn't for you... a comprehensive review would take that into account. i refuse to pay the amount for an ipod, and have an imac right now, so this would be perfect to take to a class/work/commute. as for battery life, i'm not quite sure that i would need it for 10 hours, or even 6 hours at a time. when do you not have the opportunity to plug in during a span that long? just sayin'. i don't think you can compare this to the kindle... it's so much more.i can use google voice or skype with this guy and save the money from a cell contract. easy peasy.my mom would love this to check email in the kitchen and look at photos.... so yeah, think outside your box.

Good points Joshuajs but are you sure you can use skype and google voice? I guess you can through the iphone apps for those services?

Here is my critism about the critism, a book or magazine that you buy has no stand so i dont know why this thing needs one. As far as the flash and the multitasking these are operating system issues not hardware issues they could up date that in the coming months   Thus far i think i might be getting one with the 3g.   And about all the At&T hate they seem to have the best network thus far there only weakness is theres to many iphones on it. Before the iphone came out i had a 3g card for my laptop i was able to watch streaming video all the time.

Basically i agree with what many people are saying about the Ipad. Its too much like the Iphone and Itouch. However, focusing on the positives, there are some pretty good ideas. Browsing on the internet is now clearer and bigger than the Itouch. The primary use for this product is business travel. People going on long haul flights now have a screen that is affordable (if you get the smaller size) which they can watch videos which a bigger screen. Again if you are in your office reading news articles online then this would be a good product to use since you have wifi and a big screen to see the whole website. However, im not going to buy it and i think that the Apple company need to review their products and bring out an amazing product to make up for it...maybe a propper tablet.

Apple already has established a big reputation for its successfull products so obviously we are going to be critical if it doenst match its already impressive Iphone and Itouch.

The iPad does have its positves and negatives. Some positives are that it is really asthetic therefore it attracts a lot of customers. It is thin and easily carried around. Some negatives about the iPad are that the battery life wont last long enough, the fact that it does not have flash to watch movies, or a processor etc. Apple could have installed a camera since it is not that complicated. Overall its asthetics are really good which will attract cusotmers but its hardware and software could be improved as its exactly like the iphone.

I've also read that you can't multitask on this ipad. So basically the main use of this is to read books online, use the internet (without Flash), and use iPhone apps?Over $500 is too expensive for a gadget like this...... Put in a bit more money to buy yourself a laptop, it will do the job much better, using Flash and multitasking. Or if you want mobility, just buy the best smartphone on the market with that money.

When the cell phone came out, it was new and exciting. When the tablet came out, it was new and different. When the kindle came out, it was something worth buying. There is nothing new, exciting or different about the iPad. I'm not excited.

I feel that the iPAD is something that won't cahnge the future in technology. When the mobile phone came out it made a difference in todays society. When the GPS came out it helped individuals. When the iPAD will be launched nothing will be change technology wise.I am not feeling the whole idea of the iPAD

In my opinion it is still too early to decide if the iPad will be a success or not. As of now, it is still very unclear who will be the target audience to the iPad. Businessmen would miss the physical keyboard and practicallity of a netbook/notebook, people looking for an ebook reader will miss the eInk screen and extended battery life, which in the end makes the iPad just an iPhone without the portability and small form-factor. The only target audience I could possible think of right now would be households or families using it as something they can leave laying around the house to have quick access to information or entertainment as it is something relatively easier to use for kids than a "normal" computer. Still, at 500$ it makes it an expensive toy when it is possible to have a relatively better computer for the same price but with inifitely more possibilities and potential.

The iPad is just a big iTouch. I'm sure that the interface is all wicked cool to play around with, smooth as butter, and nothing less than a joy to use. But what can it really do? When I was watching the live news feed on GDGT, I heard that the iPad would be connected to the app store and would be able to run almost every single app in there. Impressive, apart form the fact that this means it would be running on the same fundamental foundation that the iTouch is running on. So it's a huge iTouch with a interface redesigned for the bigger screen. Unfortunately, it'll be locked down to hell and the appstore is known for its fair share of problems (DERP, of course it's Apple). I think the iPad will truly shine through jailbreaking, which is frankly not something I would rely on in order to give more features for a product due to things like bricking or incomptability problems or the myriad of things that could go wrong. On top of that, it lies rather uncomfortably between an iTouch and a laptop. I got an iPhone and a laptop and there is just no place for an iPad. Frankly, I feel that a laptop and a phone has more purpose and I will use those more than I would an iPad. In other words, the iPad has very little purpose. I'll admit it does look like a real nice ebook reader, although I am dubious of Steve's claims of  "up to" 10 hours compared to the reported weeks of battery life the kindle has. But what does it do that I can't currently do? Pretty much nothing. Is it a sexy piece of hardware? Hells yeah. Is it a joy to use? I bet. Does it have enough functionality that I can drop 500$ for it when I could get a much more open piece of hardware like a laptop? Nope, and for this reason the iPad does nothing revolutionary, or innovative. Perhaps innovative in user interaction, but not in functionality. It sounds too much like a feminine hygiene product for me to take it seriously anyway (hardy har har, I made a joke on in the internets).

Apple is defining another product space like they did with the iphone, ipod etc. It would be interesting to watch how this space/category evolves. I have evaluated the pros and cons of buying an ipad. I think its worthwile to wait for rev 2.

I Am very disapointed with this Ipad. I was at the apple shop just the other day talking to the tech guy there about options for my business and he was telling me to wait for the Ipad when it comes out. However now that I have seen it what is the point??? It is in my eyes basicly just an Iphone or Large Itouch, without the camera! It doesn't run office software so there goes that for students, it won't run Ilife or Iwork software so again what's the point? If you are going to copy an Idea from Star Trek then how about making do what it does in that world....Function!I was hopping that this would be like an Imac type idea that would offer all the same features as a laptop but in a smaller lighter way! But is has failed here miserably! I would rather by an mac laptop and run this way as I see no point to this at all, and for the kind of money they want for it there is no justification at all.i watched the whole press conference on this item hoping that they would say that this would run software, but alas no can do.Apple you lost me on this one!

I have a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and an iPhone 3GS. I am interested in the iPad not for what it doesn't do or lacks, but for what it does do.For a little while I have been in the market for an e-reader. I bought the Barns and Noble Nook and returned it. Turning pages was very jerky...and I just could see keeping the thing. The Nook and Kindle can't be read in low light or dark environments. I have the B&N e-reader on my iPhone, which can be used in the dark. It works very well for it's intended purpose, but is just too small to be really effective as a stand-alone e-reader.Enter the iPad. For just a little bit more money I can now have an e-reader that can be read in low light or in the dark. And it's not just a one trick pony as the Kindle and Nook.I do agree with many reviews that it is a bit pricy. Not being able to use Flash makes me angry, too. For many people this wont be a landmark product, but, for those in the e-reader market may find what the Nook and Kindle lack.

Shouldn't someone compare the ipad to the Toughbook H1 that has none of these promlems and will work after your drop it, and being based on an intel chip it will run crakintosh OSX.

Apple is faking it again, I mean even in 2010, such high tech hardware can't play simple flash software. Are they dumb, or do they think that we are dumb?

0
Luke C.

J.R., obviously they think we are stupid and count on the "cool factor" to sell. There is plenty of tablet coming out in the summer based on Android and with multitasking, flash player and more features than the iPad (Being based on tegra 2 technology). The price is also much better (In many cases below 500$). May be this time will be apple looking stupid in the end.

People have reported that the iPad has exceeded 10 hours of straight video use. I don't know where you got the idea that it would not...

Hey, to let you know. You cannot use google voice and any other apps not produced by apple.  So don't even think about sourceforgenet downloads or skype if not an app by apple
