A group calling itself the Iranian Cyber Army hacked Twitter, the popular micro-blogging service overnight.

The "Iranian Cyber Army" managed to take Twitter down for approximately and hour before Twitter service was restored.

A recent report on the Twitter blog says "As some noticed, Twitter.com was redirected for a while but API and platform applications were working. We will update with more information and details once we've investigated more fully."

It is uncertain exactly who or what the Iranian Cyber Army is but hacker either claiming to be Iranian or actually of Iranian descent are not new. One thing is clear is these Iranian Cyber Attackers appear to support the existing government in Tehran.

Earlier this year in an under reported incident a similar attack hit some sites that I  and many others had on Dreamhost - a web hosting service. I remember the incident well, as we were launching a new campaign for a client that day and instead of the campaign, pro-Tehran propaganda was in its place.

In January pro-Iranian hackers claimed to breach the security of the Mossad, Israel's security agency. The group that claimed responsibility for that attack called itself, Ashiyaneh

"The Zionist Regime considers the merciless killing of the defenseless people in Gaza as its right and assumes that the world people will keep silent about it," the hacker group announced in a statement.

As Twitter investigates the security breach it would be wise for Twitter users to change their Twitter password as a precautionary measure.
