iPhone 4 owners can now be iPhone pwners and jailbreak their handsets via the web, using a free service called Jailbreak Me. Jailbreakme.com has seen plenty of traffic, especially since the DMCA has been updated to specify that jailbreaking a phone is legal. The Jailbreak Me hack works with iPhone OS 3.2 and higher, including iPad.

The exploit, created by an iPhone hacker called Comex, takes advantage of a hole in Safari.

When you navigate to that site on your iPhone and start the download, the hack runs automatically, also installing the Cydia Store, which is sort of like the street market of unapproved and jailbroken apps. A major selling point of Jailbreak Me is that it's reversible, but no word on what trace it leaves on the phone in the event of future warranty events, since jailbreaking an iPhone will definitely void the warranty.

Facetime and MMS Bugs Fixed

Some users have found that Jailbreak Me isn't quite working as expected. Facetime and MMS functionality was disabled, but Comex 9who developed Jailbreak Me) released a fix:

Update is up thanks to @saurik. To fix the FaceTime/MMS problem, just open Cydia and upgrade when prompted.
The jailbreaking process from JailbreakMe is not permanent. As long as you sync your iOS device with iTunes before you jailbreak it, you will be able to remove the hack by simply using the restore feature. If anything goes wrong, don't hesitate to use it.

(I am not affiliated with Jailbreak Me in any way, but support the idea of an owner being able to control the device he or she has bought)

after jailbreaking the iphone4, I understand that restoring the phone to factory default will undo it, but will apple still void the warranty? will they be able to know that it was jailbroken?
