Juniper Credit Card Rip-off

In March, I openned a credit card account with Juniper Visa (i.e. Barclays Delaware) while ordering a new computer from the Apple Store.  One of those 0% interest offers.

Well, I admit that I missed the first payment.  I was confused about the setup of the online account and well ...  Anyway, Juniper proceeded to charge me a late fee of $39.00.  I didn't protest this - I paid the monthly fee immediately, along with the late fee.  However, this late fee put my new account over the limit, so Juniper/Barclays charged me an "over the limit fee" of an additional #39.00.  So, on a balance of $1500, I incurred $78.00 in fees in one month due to one fee generating a second fee.  Sorta a joke for 0%.

Customer Support at Juniper would be nothing but quote their "t and c's."  I notified Apple so they can look into a new vendor.  Trying to contact Barclays proved futile.

I recommend no one should open an account with Juniper or Barclays since their come-on of 0% is indeed a rip-off.  They make that back and more with these "fees."

I also had a similar problem except in my case the first paymet statement never arrived.  the first I found out I was late was when I received a call from the collection department.  At which point I authorized a $100.00 check by phone for the $16.00 min payment due.  When I recieved my statement I to had a late charge and an over the limit fee. In addition my rate jumped from the 7.99% to 11.99%.  As you might imagine I was furious.  The customer service people would do nothing for me so I told them to close my accout.  At which point I was inflicted with endless leagal redrick and disclosures.  I was on the phone now for over an hour.  Before the rep had complete there oration the phone call was disconnected.  I continued to call asking for each persons supervisor, at which point I was advised that the phone call was not completed and my account was not closed and the rate had gone to the default rate.  I finally got to a senior manager that told me there is nothing that her department could do that I needed to address this with the executive office which of course had no phone number I could call.  In the mean time I refused to pay.  My experiance with credit card companies had been less than favorable however I found with a polite phone call they would generally forgive a late charge if life situations caused me to miss a date and send the payment late by a few days.  That's not to say they would always do this.  I slow payment were to become cronic I'm sure the charges would stand.  But I was a brand new customer and through no fault of my own I had not recieve the first statement.

It would  be a cold day you know were before I was going to pay 24% and all the fees.  I also found it quite humorous that they would send me a bill with a minimum paymet that would still leave me over the limit, which if paid would generate another over the limit fee.

So I got the address for the executive office and wrote a long letter to which I recieve a generic resopnce.  However I wrote a complaint to the Attorney Generals office and they followed up on my complaint.

This took a few months but once they recieved the complaint they genrated a responce saying how sorry they were that I had receive less than world class service.  (I would say no service) and that my accout would be reinstated and the late fees would be waved.  If I sent them a payment no later than the 28th of the month.  This letter was written on the 21st of the month and I recieved it on the 27th.  Which by the way was a Saterday.  I got on the phone to the author of the letter and thanked them for reinstating my account but do to the fact the letter didn't leave their mail room in a timely fashion the dates illustrated in the letter were impossible to meet.  So I told her I would go ahead and provide a payment by phone only if she sent me a fax or e-mail stating that these terms would be honored even though the impossible date had passed.  She agreed and now my account is back as it should be.  But I believe they are indeed more in the bussiness of extortion than credit and that's exactly how I worded it in the letters to executive office and Attorney general's office.   If you are to get any satifaction from Juniper you will need to seek the aid of  the Attorney General's office.  That is Lisa Madigan in IL where I live.

Hi.  I've been dealing with these idots for way to long.  I would like to know who you sent the letter too or who you called to straighten out your payment, PLEASE????

I just recieved an email that my payment was due at twice the normal amount.   I figured that this was for the August payment.  Tonight I got a phone call explaining that I had missed my July 1st payment and that I needed to pay it and the late fees now.  This was perplexing to me since I had made my payment on June 12th.  And as of June 1st, I wasn't behind on any payments.   Their explination was that I had made my payment "To Early" and that it was credited to June.  Now i needed to make July's payment and August's payment now.

Please, if I could get this resloved before it F''en up my credit score agian, would be great.

I fought this through their support site.  It took about an hour but after asking for a supervisor then a VP, I got a little resolution.  As for Apple, I notified their corporate customer relations organization - however, this did nothing to get anything done.

I will never do business with this organization or their parent, Barclays.  I wish you luck,

I'm glad you finally got satisfaction.  I have notified Apply corporate (at my expense) that they shouldn't be promoting this organization on their web  site.  Next action will be to notify Vice President Joe Biden of the situtation.

I have had an account with juniper for about a year now. I use the card every month, pay the balance off every month, and have had no problem with them. They send me an e-mail on the 20th to let me know what my balance is and the minimum payment, plus when it is due.I pay online, I get my statement online and have been very pleased with there service. I suppose that if you cant make the payment, or "forget" to, they will be just like any other card service and charge appropriate fee's.

You must be an employee of Juniper. I have had very similar circumstance as others noted in this thread, and have had nothing but 'extremely frustrating' interactions with the people at Juniper. Their site is very confusing, it seems that every time I go to log in, I have to create a new username and password. I have become so frustrated that I destroyed my card, and now cannot access my online account due to the fact that I do not have the credit card information (security code on the back). The phone help at Juniper is absolutely useless, and I agree with the person who commented and said that Juniper is in the business of extortion!

Well I never missed a payment, and, also payed more some times, now they have increased my % and it was a fixed. I have not used the card since April, and with any other card, they allow you to keep oringinal %, and opt out of card.  I have called and all they can say is we sent you a letter.  Only thing I got was if I used card after April my interest was going to be changed.

I have repeatedly called them on this and still no change, so maybe I need to contact The Attorney Generals office. This is so not right to good paying customers. All I want is my interest back so I can pay off and get rid of it, left bad taste in my mouth!!!!

I also have a credit card with Juniper and I have never made a late payment but I still got a notice that my interest rate was going to be changed. I payed the card off immediately. I just wanted to mention not all credit cards are the same. I know at least 2 that give grace on at least one late payment or over the limit infraction. It is quite apparent that Juniper is driven only by greed and care nothing about their customers. I recomend staying away from all credit cards but if you have to have one make sure it is not with Juniper.

I've had many credit cards and have never had a problem like I have with Juniper.  They did the same thing to me with jacking up the interest, late fee, over the limit fee and no one to talk to about the recorded conversations.  We were out of town and called to make a payment and they told us the payment was not due until the next month.  We were a bit confused and asked 3 times and they told us 3 times it was not due until next month.  Shortly after the due date they called and said it was late and that I got charged a late fee, and the interest rate went up 20% and because of the late fee I went over the limit and was charged another $39!  I can understand if we were late without calling, but when they tell us 3 times it's not due for another 5 weeks then they should not have charged over the limit and late fee!!!!  I asked to speak to someone that can resolve it and they said I had to fax or mail a letter.  They said that all conversations are recorded so I've been trying to get the recordings and have not been able to.  I know Juniper is in business of extortion!  They need to be sued!

I have used Juniper for almost a year now and have never had a problem, I log into their account all the time and pay my balances online, the 0% interest they offered is still applicable because I have not missed a payment. The only complaint I'd have is that the credit balance they gave me is low in comparison to my other credit cards. My credit score is pretty good, 770, considering I am a graduate student with school loans and no mortgage to help build my score. Other than that, I have nothing negative to say about Juniper.

Hi Juniper card users...does anyone have the correct web address for credit card services on line?  I just moved and don't have my recent bill and need to go online and change my address, etc.  I have been trying for the last 30 minutes to find the right website.  I know they are now part of Barclays.  Thanks!

This whole thread is amusing to me in that you could use this to form a new axiom. This is just like any other thing in the entire world...everyone seems to have a different experience and a different view. The oddest thing is that all of the info in this thread good of bad is probably 100% accurate. I have been a Juniper user for years and have never been later etc. and out of 5 cards I consider it the best. Yes...I too had my Juniper rate go up......BUT my HSBC also raised my interest rate by more than Juniper and cut my limit by half. I have never been late on any card and pay 10 times the minimum or more. This is more about the system and less about Juniper. American Express supposed to be the best did that same things.

JUNIPER CREDIT CARD IS A COMPANY THAT IS EVIL.!!!!! I WAS TWO DAYS LATE  AND THEY PUT MY INTEREST RATE FROM 13.99% TO 26 %--

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? WHEN I CALLED -THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT HOW UPSET I WAS. I HOPE THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE BURN IN HELL FOR ALL THE WRONG THEY DO!

1
J.J.F.

My wife has a Juniper card that, last year, was late by a day and they increased the rate from 9% to 29.99%. I would only hope everyone can get our government to SHUT THEM DOWN and LET JUNIPER EAT ALL OF WHAT WE USED THAT CARD ON!!!!!!!!

Good luck to all of us

Get this crap!!! I paid $140 for my June 2009 payment on June 3rd. ON july 4th at 0801 AM they called and said I was late and they wanted $252 ASAP or I would be reported. I told them I was never late and I always send all my credit card payments the first week of the month. The Junpier representitive comes back and says "sir I see you did make a payment on June 3rd but it is not within our billing cycle so you are late."  What the hell kind of business is this??  I paid within the month due and they say I am late. Now I have a $39.00 late fee and a 7% interest rate increase.   DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE CLOWNS. I intend on filing a FTC complaint for unethical business practices. WORST CREDIT COMPANY EVER!!!!!

Just pay your card on time, and you won't have any of these problems. Juniper is no different then any other credit card company, they offer a great rate to suck you in, and look for a way to increase their rates. HSBC is the worst company. I had an $15,000.00 credit limit with them, which I hardly used and one day I receive an email informing me that my credit line has been reduced. I checked my account and noticed they dropped it to $300.00. What is that? I wanted to call them and just cancel the card, but that would have hurt my credit score, so now I just cut the card up.

MikeyP

JoeC7....and everyone else who claims they don't have these problems.....

Just wait.  Paying your credit card on time does NOT make a difference.  I had a $14,000 credit limit, never missed a payment, normally kept the balance at $0,  and have a FICO score of 790.

Received a promotion whereby I could make a balance transfer for 3.99% interest for two years.  Made the transfer and LESS THAN 1.5 MONTHS LATER, received a letter that they were raising the interest rate to as much as 30.24%.

Again, no late payments, never over the limit, nothing negative at all.  Ironically, not more than 5 days prior to receiving this extortion letter, I received another promotion from them offering 4.99% interest for 3 years....and a whole stack of "credit card checks".

Fortunately I am in a position to just pay it off and tell them to $(*K off.

Wow, came across this site by accident.  We have been so frustrated with this credit card company. We paid on time always then one time my auto deposit paycheck didnt get in on time and when our payment hit the bank it was declined. The next morning i noticed this and immediately made the payment again but was hit with late fees, over the limit fee s and they wanted an additional 200 and some payment. After all this our intrest rate went to 27%. This is the worst credit card company ever, this happened with Citibank once and they took all the fees off and apologized for the inconvenience. No changes in our intrest rate of 7%. So not all credit card companies will do this to a costomer, they are not all alike.

While I agree that most issues with credit card companies are caused by 'user error' and are mostly the fault of the consumer, and some level of lack of responsibility. I more strongly agree that a lot of the credit card companies are also vultures waiting for you to make the slightest fault and take every advantage of you that they can. I very recently was accepted for a card from Juniper to use at the Apple Store. The credit limit I was given was not nearly enough to purchase much of anything from Apple. I did have a bit of a funny feeling when I gained this card (call it intuition). They website seems a bit sketchy to me (you may note that I am a web designer). Upon reading this thread and several others of similar distaste for this company, I think I am going to go with my gut on this one and cancel this card before anything happens. There are MANY card companies that are willing to take your money and some that even offer some compassion for their customers. The latter are the ones that recognize that with out happy customers they will cease to exist. Good luck to all! And C.Y.A. (cover your a$$)

My Juniper Story

After getting my op-out letter from Barclays Bank of Delaware, the bank which puts out the Juniper Credit Card, I did a little Google searching and see I’m not alone.

I’ve been a member for a few years with no issues till recently.  I started with a limit of over $1500 and an APR of 7.74% which was great because I was able to close out an account with an APR that had a double digit APR.  I was charge a small balance transfer fee which I was warned about in the fine print but it still made financial scents to go with the balance transfer.

So as time went by had no complaints or issues till the last few months ago, which is now more like almost a year ago.

Back in the end of ’08 I was going through the process of being medically separated from the army which took a great deal of my time away. So before things got too involved I set all my cards, to include Juniper, to automatically pay of the minimum each month.

The minimum payments for Juniper were much less, about $50 less, than the current interest and account protection that was being charged to my account each month.  Soon those charges made my balance higher than my limit.  It wasn’t well in to the 3rd month of being over the limit that I was able to see just what was going on.  And what I saw that even with my account being over the limit by almost $70 Juniper minimum requirement was twenty something dollars. So after $117 later in over the limit fees I paid down the amount to within a hundred of my limit and paid $10 over what the last charges to my account was.  And only after about two payments of paying what was needed, Juniper’s required minimum, finally was more than what was being charged each month in credit protection and interest.

And just like most, Juniper’s Customer Service department was no help in refunding any of those over the limit fees or changing my APR back to the 7.74% it was before these over the limit charges occurred.  There was no changing anything.  My APR went from 7.74% to 11.24%, 11.24% to 26.24%, and 26.24% to now 27.24% in the course of a few months with no written notices to inform me of the changes to my account.

Now in August my rate will be no less than 29.99% but I now, for the first time, have the option to reject these new terms which will terminate my account leaving me responsible for the outstanding balance.

So that’s my Juniper Story…

Any feedback or suggestion will be welcomed, mrmike.e.mack@gmail.com

can you say...personal accountability

I don't work for Juniper, but I do work for another credit card company. Just wanted to give a different perspective...

One thing that I did not see mentioned is the fact that new regulation to "make credit practices more fair" causes things like payments and interest rates to go up because we as Americans are staying in debt too long.

Late fees often make people go over their line of credit if they do not leave any room in their balance for such fees. If you only have $10 available, a $39 late charge will make you go over. This is not the credit card company's fault. You paid late. You went over. It stinks, but it is fact...

Credit card companies are being charged more for the money they borrowing the money they need to advance you the money you spend. Because their interest rates are higher, your interest rates are higher... if credit card companies don't make money, credit card companies don't exist...

The easy answer is to pay cash. Don't charge. Don't rely on someone else's money to pay for the things you want and need. If you want to enjoy the convinience of spending someone else's money, you must accept the terms by which they give you that money.

Ripped off by Juniper

I would NOT reccomend Juniper for a credit card. I signed up for their 8% fixed NON-Introductory Rate. Then transfered all my balances to them for at fee around $90. Then with in 6 months they raised my NON Introductory rate to 14%. I argued that this was a fixed rate and could not be changed because I had not defaulted on my card in anyway. Juniper stated that they could basically do what they wanted. I paid them off within 2-3 months, but felt very cheated.

According to the documentation with the card, juniper can charge an overlimit fee and increase your APR even if their late fee exceeds your credit limit.

That said and understood, my charges from a balance transfer were close to my limit, enough so it went over and I incurred the charge. My error. So I called juniper, and spent 30 minutes with a "supervisor" to tell me tough luck.

So I paid my card down 150$ by my due date. I got my statement today - another 39$ fee was incurred, yet I had paid it before my due date AND still have credit available.

I called today, knowing this must be an error of theirs. Nothing they could do they told me. Explaining the card was under the credit limit at the time of statement closing did nothing for my argument.

I have never dealt with such a disrespectful company. I believe a Class Action Lawsuit should be brought against them for these double-dipping practices.

I cannot believe people actually sign a contract and spend a companys money without knowing what their getting into i.e. terms and conditions.  The fees clearly come from being  over your limit any time during your billing cycle and late fees come from making a payment before your new billing cycle starts although it is still before your due date. Barclays Bank doesn't partner with such huge United States partners like MAC, LL Bean, Air Tran Airways, Future Trust, UBS, Spirit Airways, BJ Wholesale, Barnes and Noble, Best Western, Buck Masters, Clark, China Airways, Direct TV, Frontier, Gulf, Harvard Alumni, Sinclair, Virgin Mobile, Travelocity, Vegas.com, Caseys, Payless, Aerlguis Airways, Carnival Cruise, US Airways, amoung several other high profile accounts, to ripp people off. Look it up Barclays does sound banking and has not taken $1.oo of goverment aid domestic or abroad.

I have experienced many difficulties with Juniper.  Tried talking to them about the problems and to say the least they couldn't care less.  Too bad that's the way it is.  Once right after I had gotten the card they sent me a check for about $9.60 and dumb me couldn't figure out for what .  Did not read the very fine print on the back - so a whole year later I find a charge on my card for $129.00 which I find was placed there because I cashed that check a year earlier for some sort of insurance they sell.  DUH!  Now I am trying to make payment on line and they have told I have been locked out because of SECURITY REASONS. WHAT!  They are beyond bad, they are scoundrels.
