General Motors filed for bankruptcy this morning, and has announced a list of 14 plants as well as three service centers that will close by December 2010. In addition, GM has been removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

List of General Motors plant closings:

  • Orion, MI
  • Pontiac, MI (Stamping, Assembly)
  • Spring Hill, TN
  • Wilmington, DE
  • Grand Rapids, MI
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Mansfield, OH
  • Livonia, MI
  • Flint, MI
  • Willow Run, MI
  • Parma, OH
  • Fredricksburg, VA
  • Massena, NY

Service and Parts Operations closures:

  • Boston, MA
  • Jacksonville, FL
  • Columbus OH
The closings will leave G.M. with 33 plants in the United States by 2012, down from 47 last year. G.M. is cutting about 21,800 hourly jobs by 2011, though it did not say how many people currently work at the plants being closed.
Additionally, GM will build a future small car in the United States utilizing a UAW-GM assembly plant on standby capacity status, with major metal stampings supported from a UAW-GM U.S. stamping plant also on standby capacity. This new small car will play a vital role in GM’s plans to improve the fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet. Small cars represent one of the fastest growing segments in both the U.S. and around the world. The re-tooled assembly plant will be capable of building 160,000 cars annually. Selection of the site will be determined in the future.
