Madoff-ed Alexandra Penney is now blogging and it is Really Awful
For those of you who don't know the story, one of the people who was allegedly defrauded by Madoff's giant 50 billion dollar ponzi scheme, is now writing a blog about it. It's called the 'bag lady papers' and it is so bad you can't miss it. The owner of a 5th avenue apartment and an artist loft in SOHO now writes about her anxieties about being poor. She has a remarkable ability to render even the most sympathetic reader immediately hostile with her callous observations about the poor and what life will be like for her if she can't move among the super elite. It's being blogged in The Daily Beast under the title 'the bag lady's papers'. The real story is the vitriolic posts being attached to the story--and their debates about class and how America should feel about Penney's plight.

Alexandra Penney writes on the blog link you give: "Yes, I did write sex books (How to Make Love to a Man), and they made good money, which I saved in an account with the M.F., aka Madoff."
She talks about keeping her 'edge'? Over who, the poor? Her work is inconsequential, an atrocious cosmetic persiflage and misunderstanding of the wonderful feminist photographer, Cindy Sherman. It's the needy and disenfranchised served by the schools and charities that were purportedly ripped off by Madoff that deserve attention.
Thanks for the post. It's an insight into how the border is fuzzy in post-human turbo-capitalist communities. It will take more than poor old Obama to reset the mindset that the USa has adopted since Watergate. Remember John Dean's maxim that one can lie until backed in the corner. Or Grouch Marx telling irony with this quote:
"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made."

Hilarious how bad this is. Is it possible that it is satire?

Thanks for this post. Can you add an opinion tag to it? You can do that in the edit field and check the box that says opinion. Thanks!

I love con10t's comments re. turbo-capitalists communities.
We watched (daughter of Robert Redford) Amy Redford's film The Guitarist last night. It is a beautiful film and it hasn't won awards, to my surprise. It is worth watching because the heroin is diagnosed with cancer, and doesn't have long to live. She is poor, but she sees an ad for a short lease on an empty penthouse, and decides to take it - and doesn't leave the building. She uses her credit cards to buy all the objects she has always wanted – "they speak to me". She surrounds herself with beautiful things, orders in large quantities of good food, has heartwarming affairs with the delivery man and the pizza girl. She learns to play electric guitar. She has created a stress free environment. – and she discovers she is cured! Then, when her credit runs out, and her 2 month lease is up, she sells everything for a fraction of it's value to the pawn shop, and busks, ..and life goes on.

OK, I just saw this posted on the comments --if you don't have time to look at the original Bag Lady's Papers, this posting pretty much sums up the ridiculous tone of the blog itself:

Bag lady Diary Post IV
Today I walk outside and look into the lined and leathery face of the man on the corner. Does he have something to eat? Will I one day be similarly leathery? I clutch my hands and am reassured, they are still soft. (larry bird walks away to his car).
I go to get some breakfast. I'm at Starbucks. Oh my gawd, this cruller has so much more fat than sashimi. It's unbelievable. As I order my latte (oh my gawd HOOOLD the sugar--you have to ASK when you're among the rabble) the woman at the register looks at me but doesn't say the amount due. And I slowly realize, she can't read. She probably grew up playing with wires and eating food from garbage cans. Jesus, are her nails yellow. Are my nails yellow?? (Still half a xanax left ,thank good---oh OBAMA, pleas I nEEED my scrip renewed, is there any way to expedite your inaguration??????? WAAAAAHH) Ok, get hold of myself, someone is looking at me, and because I'm not wearing my white shirt I feel vulnerable. I think he is going to mug me. Oh wait, you made my latte? But you look poor, how do you know how to steam milk......

No one can know where Ms. Penney will go with her new education, and her new still-fresh wounds. I can only suspect that with her self-made know-how and creative can-do attitude, she will indeed resurrect herself. In so doing, she will show us all examples of how we can regain our footing and confidence as well. I further suspect that she will share some of her wealth with organizations that lend a hand-up to those less fortunate--those women in particular who lack the "back-up" assets that Ms. Penney fairly admits will buy her some valuable time.
Curiously, I can't stop thinking about her last name. Ms. Penney isn't Penniless literally. This self-made woman would never be penniless, due to her creativity, work ethic, sense of humor, and some luck. Yet you do remember that old, still true saying about luck meeting tons of preparation don't you? So, while a lot of her money is gone, no one can steal Ms. Penney's mind. (I'm not Jewish, and I know and respect that.)
Not that you asked for my advice, yet if you have not yet "made it" to the extent that Ms. Penney has, curb the urge and save the time it would take you to write jealous remarks, and reread the part where she outlines her working three jobs, etc.,. Only in America, right? Refocus any veiled contempt and busy yourself writing the last chapters of your own success. Yes, you are on the road, and you CAN finish big, but never by quitting.
We are all richer for Alexandra Penney (and anyone) telling her truth, and for a country which allows us to do so, and finally for an internet to give us both the instant and far-reaching platform in which to share.
Let's create and embody solutions. Let's continue to offer a shoulder to anyone who is suffering, much like the inscription on the pedestal of our proud lady, the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free". Let's not excoriate people who say they feel down-trodden, especially when they flat out exclaim they don't want our pity.
We can do it Women!

I wrote a little piece contrasting Penney's take on being Madoff-ed with that of another writer / victim, Geneen Roth. Just proves it is not what happens to us in life but how we react to it that matters.
