CAIRO, Egypt - An abandoned anchor was responsible for cutting one of the undersea Internet cables severed last week, causing disruptions across the Middle East and parts of Asia, the cable's owner said Friday.

Uh huh - of course we're all that gullible.

But no way did five different anchors (or even one hyper-aggressive anchor) sever five different cables.

mtippett, I am going to put on my "Dale Gribble Paranoid Conspiracy Hat" on here and assume forces are at work to ensure middle east terrorist organizations are being deprived of the Internet and communications which they may need to carry out instructions to others worldwide and as Jordan aptly states 5 cables in a row? Hmmm sounds like cyber terrorism is a good way to slow em down. That's what I would do, "Bloodless and Frustrating" is the way to go.

Here's another theory from my husband David, - which also makes perfect sense:

He thinks that a government is using these "convenient" breaks in the cables, as an opportunity to install listening devices a few miles away from the breaks.

The breaks will soon be repaired and any "ground" gained by anyone who might have actually caused the breaks will be over.  So, consider that when the breaks are repaired, the listening devices will remain and be undetectable and usable for any length of time before discovery.

Incidentally, U.S., nuclear submarine Jimmy Carter, (which "oh really?!") is rumored to be currently in the Persian Gulf - has special modifications to enable fiber optic underwater splicing and tapping of undersea fibre optic cables.

There are of course many problems with this approach.  The big one being the assumption that all terrorists are in The Middle East.   But I guess American phone calls are already being monitored.

Hence why I state Terrorism central in the middle east may be being deprived by the disruption of communications due to this cable break and unable or slowed down considerably in getting their messages out to others in their organization the world over.   At least thats what I, Hank, Bill and Boomhauer think.
