Maytag Recall: 1.6M Fire Hazard Fridges Identified From 7 Brands

Maytag has announced a recall of 1.6 million fridges that have been identified as potential fire hazards. In the event of a relay failure the recalled refrigerators could burst into flames. The voluntary recall effects seven brands of refrigerators all made by Maytag.

The seven recalled refrigerator brands are: Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Amana®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley®. The Maytag recall impacts both side and top freezer models made in the USA and sold between January 2001 and January 2004. Bottom freezer models have not been impacted.

The company has already received 41 reports of a relay failure ignition, 16 of which resulted in property damage ranging from smoke stains to fully engulfed kitchens. The The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Maytag announced that the company recalls the refrigerators that affect 1.6 million units. It's a voluntary recall and includes Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Amana®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand refrigerators.

Maytag, a Newton, Iowa based corporation and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission say that Maytag recalls the refrigerators because an electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
