A photo of a fake sign at a McDonald's that had been floating around the web for years has gotten new life thanks to Twitter, and, more to the point, people's willingness to pass along web items without subjecting them to critical thinking.

The racist McDonald's sign, photographed taped to a restaurant door, reads, "As an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies, African-American customers are now required to pay an additional fee of $1.50 per transaction."

The sign was accompanied by an 800 number, which actually leads to KFC's customer service hotline.

The sign (now deleted from Twitpic) was retweeted far and wide, and McDonald's was forced to weigh in, explicitly denouncing the racist sign as a hoax.
