Michael Arrington, Top Tech Blogger, Abandons iPhone
Michael Arrington, Founder and Co-Editor from TechCrunch, published a blog post "I Quit The iPhone" about his recent decision to abandon the iPhone and AT&T. The decision was motivated by Apple's ban on Google Voice Application ealier this week.
Apple and AT&T are now blocking the iPhone version of the Google Voice app. Why? Because they absolutely don’t want people doing exactly what I’m doing - moving their phone number to Google and using the carrier as a dumb pipe.
So I have to choose between the iPhone and Google Voice. It’s not an easy decision. Except, it sort of is. Google isn’t forcing the decision on me, Apple and AT&T are. So I choose to work with the company that isn’t forcing me to do things their way. And in this case, that’s Google.
Apple made the wildly unpopular move to ban Google Voice Application from iPhone on July 28th. The ban stopped iPhone users from accessing Google's new Google Voice service, which allows users to manage phone calls with unprecedented degrees of control. The service, while benefiting the users, could hurt the business interests of Apple's exclusive US partner AT&T.

I read this piece through The Washington Post website today...have to say that I kind of liked all the WP comments...most of them pointed out that the author is whining a bit. I agree... It is just one application he is whining about, and as others commented on the W. Post website, the iPhone is a phone...Arrington is asking it to do a lot more than just be a phone!

I think he made his decision public as a way of pressuring Apple to "do the right thing". With FCC now investigating the Google Voice case, Apple might overturn the ban in the future. One thing to be certain is that opinion leaders in the tech community like Arrington can influence his followers' buying decisions.
