JERRY SEINFELD BILL GATES COMMERCIAL : SHOE CIRCUS

Jerry Seinfeld is waltzing through the mall eating a churro when he spots Bill Gates shopping for new kicks at Shoe Circus, a scene that sets the stage for one of the most talked-about commercials as of late.  The 90-second spot debuted on Thursday, September 4, to confused audiences who weren't quite sure what Microsoft was trying to sell them.

The ad with Seinfeld and Gates tells the story of the odd couple's day at discount emporium Shoe Circus in the mall, where Gates buys a snappy faux-leather number called "The Conquistador. It employs quick-cut editing and the kind of "humor from nothing" approach that defined Seinfeld's TV series. As they exit the store, Seinfeld asks if Microsoft is working on something to make computers "moist and chewy like cake, so we can eat 'em while we're working." Seinfeld tells Gates to adjust his underwear if the answer is yes, and the software mogul does so, much to the comic's delight.

Feedback from the web has been varied:

Besides the slick and probably expensive editing designed to make Jerry Seinfeld look like the more awkward of the pair, there's not a whole lot of special effects in this clip. In fact, there's not really a whole lot of anything, including laughs, information or pimping of Vista.
Maybe I’m off base here but I think if Microsoft is trying to engage people with this ad, it has failed miserably.
Marshall Kirkpatrick: The Windows Not Walls campaign is widely believed to be the first response to Apple's high profile Mac guy/Windows guy series. While Microsoft tried to be hip in its response, it's a faux hip based on a pointlessly obscure message.

Sarah Perez: It's hard to watch Bill Gates in action and not see him as just the goofy, geeky guy that he is. And the bonus shot of his Shoe Carnival card featuring his mug shot? Hilarious! If anything, Bill came across as a loveable nerd, not a ruthless businessman of an evil corporation, as many like to paint him these days.

Personally I thought this commercial was cute and easy - it nabbed a few giggles (and some dumbfounded head shakes when it ended) from the NowPublic team.  Microsoft has explained that this is the ice breaker commercial, and the following spots will tell a more comprehensive story.  I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.

epic failure......

Really?  I think it's getting us to do exactly what advertisers want us to do: talk about it.  That, at least, is some measure of success.

Maybe, and in that vein "it doesn't matter what they are saying about you as long as they are still talking about you".  But we all know how talented Seinfeld can be, and many of us know how amusing Bill Gates can be, and I think they shot way wide of the mark with this attempt and left many of us thinking about what "could have been".

I also agree with the comment below, I on occasion wanna smack the Mac kid for being to "cocky".

And in full disclosure, I use a Mac daily....but I have p.c.'s as well.....( I even own an authorized copy of windows and office!!!)

I think it's lame. Merely my opinion. (In all fairness, I sometimes want to smack the "I'm a Mac" guy, too)

Aww, I feel like the kid who laughs out loud at a stupid joke when no one else does...awkward...

Well, as a Mac and PC owner, I would say this series of commercials has an inherent Windows problem.

Slow to boot up and get moving.

Let's see how it performs now that the chimes have sounded.

p.s. I hate those chimes.  Mac even more so.  I can turn down Windows.  How about THAT Mac guy?
